TL;DR

The best 1Password alternative in 2026 is Bitwarden: Premium is billed at $19.80 a year, the free plan syncs unlimited passwords across unlimited devices, and the code is open source. 1Password itself has no free plan and its Individual plan is $3.99 a month billed yearly after a first-year promotion.

Choose Proton Pass when the free plan must cover every device and privacy is the reason you are leaving, and Keeper Business Starter at $2 per user a month for a team of 5 to 10. Zoho Vault Standard is the lowest published business seat on this list at $0.90 per user a month, billed yearly.

Passbolt Community Edition fits a team that wants to self-host for free. Prices were read on each vendor's pricing page on 19 October 2026.

Key facts9 tools compared: Bitwarden, Proton Pass, Keeper, Dashlane, RoboForm, Zoho Vault, Apple…
  • Updated: November 5, 2026
  • Top pick: Bitwarden (best for: Anyone leaving 1Password who wants a free plan that syncs and the lowest personal renewal)
  • Top pick price as of November 5, 2026: Bitwarden: Free plan; Premium $19.80/yr; Teams $4 and Enterprise $6 per user/mo, billed yearly.
  • 9 tools compared: Bitwarden, Proton Pass, Keeper, Dashlane, RoboForm, Zoho Vault, Apple Passwords, Passbolt, LastPass
  • Proton Pass (best for: Privacy-minded users who want a free plan on every device plus hide-my-email aliases): Free plan; Pass Plus billed $35.88 every 12 months; business from $1.99/user/mo yearly.
  • Keeper (best for: Small teams of 5 to 10 people that want an admin console at the lowest published seat): Business Starter $2/user/mo for 5 to 10 users; Unlimited $42.99/yr; billed yearly.
  • Dashlane (best for: Users and companies that want phishing and credential-risk alerts sold with the vault): Premium $5.42/mo billed yearly; business Password Management $8/user/mo yearly.

People leave 1Password for one of three reasons: they want a free plan, they want the second-year bill to drop, or they want the code or the server in their own hands. Bitwarden answers all three, which is why it leads this list, but it is not the cheapest seat for every team size.

Toolradar data: on 1Password's Toolradar profile, its entry paid plan at $3.99 a month billed yearly ranks #11 of 15 for price among password managers with a verified entry price, where the median is $2.99, and 1Password is listed as an alternative to 32 other tools, the most in the category, as of October 2026. The password manager ranking tracks 37 tools, and 59% of them are free, freemium or open source.

So the market is crowded with cheaper options, and the question is which one keeps the features you used. For the tool you are leaving, see our 1Password review and the 1Password pricing breakdown.

How we ranked: nine alternatives, USD list prices read on vendor pages on 19 October 2026, ordered by how much of a 1Password setup each one replaces for less money, for one person, a family and a 10-person team. Cyberpresso runs no test lab, so this ranking rests on published prices and documented features, not on hands-on testing. Method and disclosures are on the about page.

Top Pick

Bitwarden

Open-source password manager whose free plan syncs every device and whose paid tiers undercut 1Password at every size.

Pricing
Free plan; Premium $19.80/yr; Teams $4 and Enterprise $6 per user/mo, billed yearly.

Best for: Anyone leaving 1Password who wants a free plan that syncs and the lowest personal renewal

Pros

  • The free plan stores unlimited passwords on unlimited devices and shares with one other user, a pilot 1Password cannot match.
  • Premium adds the authenticator, file attachments, emergency access and security reports for $1.65 a month billed yearly.
  • Families covers six premium accounts for $47.88 a year, against 1Password Families at $5.99 a month for five people.

Cons

  • SSO and self-hosting sit on Enterprise, so a team that needs them pays the Enterprise seat, not the Teams rate.
  • The free plan has no built-in authenticator, so a pilot without Premium keeps TOTP codes in a separate app.
2 Proton Pass logo

Proton Pass

Proton's password manager with an unlimited-device free plan, built-in aliases and cheap team seats.

Pricing
Free plan; Pass Plus billed $35.88 every 12 months; business from $1.99/user/mo yearly.

Best for: Privacy-minded users who want a free plan on every device plus hide-my-email aliases

Pros

  • Free covers unlimited logins on unlimited devices, two vaults, sharing with two people and 10 hide-my-email aliases.
  • Pass Plus adds unlimited aliases, a 2FA authenticator, dark web monitoring and emergency access, with a 30-day money-back guarantee.
  • Pass Essentials is $23.88 per user a year with dark web monitoring and a built-in authenticator for small teams.

Cons

  • Every business plan has a three-user minimum, so a solo consultant pays for seats nobody uses.
  • SSO and SCIM wait for Pass Professional at $53.88 per user a year, half again above Bitwarden Teams.
3 Keeper logo

Keeper

Business-first password manager with a cheap starter tier for small teams and a full enterprise ladder.

Pricing
Business Starter $2/user/mo for 5 to 10 users; Unlimited $42.99/yr; billed yearly.

Best for: Small teams of 5 to 10 people that want an admin console at the lowest published seat

Pros

  • Business Starter is $2 per user a month billed yearly with an admin console, sharing and autofill for 5 to 10 users.
  • Keeper Business, one tier up, adds shared team folders, delegated administration and a free Family plan for every user.
  • Keeper Unlimited covers unlimited devices and unlimited sharing with 24/7 support for one person.

Cons

  • Business Starter moves to Keeper Business pricing automatically once the team passes 10 users, per Keeper's own documentation.
  • Keeper Unlimited costs more than Bitwarden Premium or RoboForm Premium for one person.
4 Dashlane logo

Dashlane

Premium-priced password manager that now leads with scam protection and credential risk tools.

Pricing
Premium $5.42/mo billed yearly; business Password Management $8/user/mo yearly.

Best for: Users and companies that want phishing and credential-risk alerts sold with the vault

Pros

  • Premium includes unlimited devices, scam protection, dark web monitoring and a VPN for public Wi-Fi.
  • The Family plan covers 10 accounts for $8.13 a month billed yearly, the most seats of any family plan here.
  • Omnix Credential Protection at $4 per user a month watches domains outside SSO for credential risk.

Cons

  • Dashlane no longer sells a free plan or monthly billing for any plan, so there is no cheap way to pilot it.
  • Password Management at $8 per user a month leaves a company on Dashlane nearly level with 1Password Business.
5 RoboForm logo

RoboForm

Long-running password manager with one of the lowest personal renewals and a simple business seat.

Pricing
Premium $2.49/mo billed yearly, renewing at $29.88/yr; Business $39.95/user/yr.

Best for: Individuals who want a low, predictable personal renewal and strong form filling

Pros

  • Premium renews at $29.88 a year, below 1Password Individual's regular rate by about $18 on our arithmetic.
  • The Family plan covers up to 5 premium accounts and renews at $47.75 a year.
  • Business is $3.33 per user a month billed yearly for teams of any size.

Cons

  • The free plan is limited to a single device, so it cannot pilot phone and laptop together.
  • Enterprise pricing is custom, and self-hosting is reserved for very large deployments.
6 Zoho Vault logo

Zoho Vault

Business password manager from Zoho with a free tier and the lowest paid team seat on this list.

Pricing
Free plan; Standard $0.90, Professional $4.50, Enterprise $7.20 per user/mo, billed yearly.

Best for: Small businesses that want the cheapest published business seat, especially on Zoho apps

Pros

  • Free includes unlimited passwords, unlimited devices, a built-in 2FA authenticator and offline access.
  • Standard at $0.90 per user a month adds team sharing, admin controls and Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 integration.
  • Enterprise adds Active Directory, SSO for cloud apps, SIEM integration and Okta and OneLogin support.

Cons

  • Professional and Enterprise require at least 5 users, so the useful group features start at a floor.
  • Breached password alerts wait for Professional, so a Standard team gets no breach alerts in the vault.
7 Apple Passwords logo

Apple Passwords

Apple's free built-in password manager for passwords, passkeys and verification codes across Apple devices.

Pricing
Free with an Apple account; built into iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and macOS Sequoia.

Best for: All-Apple households that want passwords, passkeys and codes synced for free

Pros

  • It costs nothing and syncs passwords and passkeys across approved Apple devices through iCloud Keychain.
  • Shared Groups let a family share passwords and passkeys, and it stores automatic verification codes.
  • Windows users can reach the same passwords in Chrome or Edge through iCloud for Windows.

Cons

  • Apple documents Apple devices and Windows only, so a household with an Android phone needs another manager.
  • There is no admin console, so it cannot replace 1Password Business or Teams.
8 Passbolt logo

Passbolt

Open-source team password manager built for self-hosting, with a free edition and a paid Pro tier.

Pricing
Community Edition free, self-hosted; Pro $4.90/user/mo billed yearly, minimum 10 users.

Best for: IT teams that want an open-source, self-hosted team vault with no license cost

Pros

  • Community Edition is free under the AGPLv3 license with unlimited users, groups, shared folders and an open API.
  • Pro adds LDAP provisioning, SSO with Microsoft, Google and OpenID, account recovery and an activity log.
  • A cloud-managed option exists for teams that want Passbolt without running the server.

Cons

  • Pro needs at least 10 users, so a five-person team pays for ten seats or stays on Community.
  • Community Edition comes with community support only, so someone in-house owns updates and backups.
9 LastPass logo

LastPass

Well-known password manager with cheap personal plans and a business ladder up to Business Max.

Pricing
Premium $3/mo; Teams $4.25/user/mo up to 50 users; billed yearly.

Best for: Teams that know LastPass already and want a familiar console at a mid-range seat

Pros

  • Premium is $3 a month billed yearly, and Families covers six premium accounts for one dollar more a month.
  • Teams at $4.25 per user a month gives an admin console, shared folders and security policies for up to 50 users.
  • Business adds 100+ security policies and a Families account with five extra licenses for each employee.

Cons

  • LastPass Free is limited to one device type, computer or mobile, which ends a two-device pilot.
  • LastPass says a 2022 attacker copied a vault backup in which website URLs were unencrypted, a history many security teams still weigh.

What it is

A 1Password alternative is a password manager that stores, generates and autofills logins across your devices and can replace 1Password's Individual, Families or business plans without losing shared vaults or admin controls.

The benchmark you are replacing: 1Password Individual is billed yearly at its regular rate, with $2.99 a month for the first year for new customers who buy direct. Families covers five people at $5.99 a month regular. For companies, the Teams Starter Pack is $24.95 a month billed yearly for 10 members, capped at 20, and Business is $107.88 per user per year.

There is no free 1Password plan, only a 14-day trial, so every alternative with a real free tier wins the pilot by default.

Why it matters

The promotion is the trap. 1Password's pricing page says the first-year rate applies only to new customers, on annual billing, bought directly, so a household budgeted on the promotional rate pays the regular rate in year two, about $12 more a year on our arithmetic.

For a company the jump is larger. A 10-person team outgrows the Teams Starter Pack once it needs identity-provider provisioning or more than 20 seats, and the same 10 people on Business cost $1,078.80 a year, our arithmetic on the printed per-user rate. That is the bill most alternatives undercut by half or more.

Cyberpresso data: the newsletter reaches 28,000+ security readers at a 31% open rate, from the audience file updated November 1, 2026. They asked for the yearly bill, not the monthly slogan, so every price below is the annual figure or the per-month figure billed yearly.

Whatever you move to, put a hardware security key on the admin account and turn on an authenticator app before you import, because the new vault becomes the single place an attacker wants.

Key features to look for

A free plan that actually syncs
1Password has none. Bitwarden, Proton Pass and Zoho Vault give unlimited passwords on unlimited devices free, while RoboForm Free is one device and LastPass Free is one device type.
The year-two price, not the promotion
1Password and RoboForm quote first-year deals. Compare the renewal: 1Password Individual's regular rate against the lower yearly renewals of RoboForm Premium and Bitwarden Premium, which is where the real saving sits.
Where SSO starts
Bitwarden puts SSO on Enterprise at $6, Proton on Pass Professional at $4.49, and Zoho Vault on Enterprise at $7.20 per user a month, all billed yearly. Price the tier your identity review demands.
Self-hosting and open code
Bitwarden can be self-hosted on Enterprise and Passbolt Community Edition is free under AGPLv3, which matters when the vault cannot sit on a vendor cloud.

Pricing

Every figure below is a USD list price read on 19 October 2026 on the vendor's own page: 1Password personal, 1Password business, Bitwarden, Proton Pass business, Keeper, LastPass and Zoho Vault. Keeper's Business Starter rate comes from Keeper's plan guide, and RoboForm business from RoboForm's business pricing.

A 10-person team pays $1,078.80 a year on 1Password Business. On our arithmetic from the printed per-user rates, the same headcount costs $480 on Bitwarden Teams, $240 on Keeper Business Starter, $238.80 on Proton Pass Essentials and $108 on Zoho Vault Standard. The 1Password Teams Starter Pack at $299.40 a year is the fair comparison only while the team stays at 20 people or fewer and needs no identity-provider sync.

For one person, compare yearly bills: Bitwarden Premium is $19.80, RoboForm Premium renews at $29.88, Proton Pass Plus is billed $35.88 every 12 months, LastPass Premium works out to $36 and Keeper Unlimited is $42.99. 1Password Individual at its regular rate works out to $47.88, so every paid alternative here costs less in year two except Dashlane.

Minimums change small-team math: Proton business plans start at three users, Zoho Vault Professional and Enterprise at five, and Passbolt Pro at ten.

Mistakes to avoid
×Budgeting 1Password on the first-year promotion, then paying the regular rate when the plan renews.
×Comparing a monthly sticker with an annual one. Every price on this page is billed yearly, so compare yearly bills.
×Picking Bitwarden Teams when the identity review requires SSO, which only arrives on Enterprise.
×Buying a Proton or Zoho business plan for two people and forgetting the three or five user minimum.
×Importing the 1Password export and leaving the export file on a laptop or in a downloads folder.
Expert tips
→Run the free plan of Bitwarden, Proton Pass or Zoho Vault on your phone and laptop for a week before you cancel 1Password.
→Price your real headcount at 10 and at 25 people, because Keeper Business Starter and the 1Password Teams Starter Pack both stop at a ceiling.
→Export from 1Password, import, check a sample of logins, then delete the export file the same day.
→The Cyberpresso daily brief flags password manager price changes and breach notices when they land.

The bottom line

Bitwarden is the 1Password alternative for most people: a free plan that syncs every device, a Premium renewal well under 1Password's and a team ladder with SSO on Enterprise. Read the Bitwarden review and the 1Password vs Bitwarden comparison before you switch, and price it on Bitwarden pricing.

Choose Proton Pass when privacy and aliases drove the move (costs on Proton Pass pricing), and Keeper for a team of 5 to 10 on the cheapest starter seat, with tiers on Keeper pricing. Choose Dashlane only when scam and credential alerts are worth paying near 1Password prices; the Dashlane vs 1Password page sets them side by side.

Choose Zoho Vault for the cheapest business seat, RoboForm for a low personal renewal, Apple Passwords for an all-Apple home, and Passbolt to self-host. If LastPass is on your shortlist, read 1Password vs LastPass and our LastPass alternatives page first. The wider field is in the password manager guide, best free password managers and family password managers, and the Cyberpresso brief carries the next price change.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best 1Password alternative in 2026?

Bitwarden, for most people and teams. Its free plan syncs unlimited passwords across unlimited devices, Premium renews for well under half of 1Password Individual, and Teams and Enterprise are $4 and $6 per user a month billed yearly, with SSO on Enterprise. Proton Pass is the privacy pick and Keeper Business Starter the cheapest admin-console seat for a team of 5 to 10.

Is there a free alternative to 1Password?

Yes, several. Bitwarden, Proton Pass and Zoho Vault each have a free plan with unlimited passwords on unlimited devices, Apple Passwords is free on Apple devices, and Passbolt Community Edition is free to self-host. 1Password itself offers only a 14-day trial, no free plan.

What is cheaper than 1Password for a small business?

For 10 people, 1Password Business costs $1,078.80 a year on our arithmetic. The same team costs $480 a year on Bitwarden Teams, $240 on Keeper Business Starter, $238.80 on Proton Pass Essentials and $108 on Zoho Vault Standard, all billed yearly. The 1Password Teams Starter Pack at $299.40 a year is competitive up to 20 people.

Is Bitwarden as good as 1Password?

On price and openness Bitwarden is ahead: it is open source, can be self-hosted on Enterprise and has a free plan that syncs every device. 1Password Business bundles identity-provider provisioning and Watchtower alerts in one tier, while Bitwarden splits directory sync onto Teams and SSO onto Enterprise, so check which tier your requirements land on.

How much does 1Password cost after the first year?

1Password Individual is $3.99 a month billed yearly at the regular rate, after $2.99 a month in the first year for new customers who buy directly. Families is $5.99 a month regular for five people. Business is $8.99 per user a month billed yearly, or $107.88 per user per year.

Which 1Password alternative is open source?

Bitwarden and Passbolt. Passbolt Community Edition is free under the AGPLv3 license with unlimited users and is built for self-hosting, while Passbolt Pro adds SSO and LDAP at $4.90 per user a month billed yearly with a 10-user minimum. Bitwarden publishes its code and offers self-hosting on Enterprise.

Is Apple Passwords a good replacement for 1Password?

For an all-Apple household, yes: Apple Passwords is free, syncs passwords and passkeys through iCloud Keychain, stores verification codes and shares through Shared Groups, and Windows users can reach it in Chrome or Edge with iCloud for Windows. Apple documents no Android app and there is no admin console, so it cannot replace 1Password for a mixed household or a business.
