TL;DR

McAfee is worth it in 2026 only if you will use the identity side of McAfee+, and only if you budget the renewal, not the intro. McAfee+ Premium costs $49.99 for the first year and then renews at $149.99 a year, Advanced goes from $89.99 to $199.99, and Ultimate from $199.99 to $279.99, on McAfee's US plans page in October 2026.

Every McAfee+ plan covers unlimited devices. The catch is the calendar: McAfee charges an annual renewal 30 days before the term ends, so you must cancel at least 31 days before expiry. A buyer who only wants antivirus should price Bitdefender or the free Defender built into Windows first.

  • Best for: One person with many devices who wants antivirus and identity monitoring in one subscription.
  • Price as of October 31, 2026: McAfee+ from $49.99 first year (Premium), renews at $149.99/yr; unlimited devices.

  • Premium renewal vs first year: 3x ($49.99 to $149.99)
  • Cancel at least: 31 days before expiry
  • Devices on McAfee+: Unlimited
  • Top identity theft coverage: Up to $2M on Ultimate

Pros

  • Unlimited devices on Premium, Advanced and Ultimate, so a phone, tablet and two laptops cost the same as one device.
  • Every card prints its renewal next to the intro, so the year-two bill is visible before checkout.
  • Advanced adds personal info removal and identity restoration, and Ultimate doubles the identity theft coverage.

Cons

  • Premium renews at 3 times its intro price, the steepest jump of the three tiers.
  • The renewal is charged 30 days before expiry, so you must cancel at least 31 days ahead to avoid it.

McAfee sells its consumer security as McAfee+, three individual tiers called Premium, Advanced and Ultimate, plus starter and family plans.

The intro price is the headline, and the renewal is the real cost. On the cheapest tier the second year costs three times the first, which is the single most important number for anyone comparing McAfee with a rival on a one-year quote.

This review prices every individual McAfee+ plan on both the one-year and two-year terms, works out what each costs over three years from the renewal McAfee prints, and sets the result beside Norton, Bitdefender, Aura and Microsoft Defender.

For the head to head with Norton, read our Norton vs McAfee comparison; this page is about whether McAfee alone is worth paying for.

Toolradar data: McAfee is not one of the 3 top picks in Toolradar's antivirus guide (Bitdefender Total Security, Kaspersky Premium and Malwarebytes Premium), prices checked October 2026.

That guide advises skipping Norton and McAfee unless you want their bundled features, which is exactly the question this review answers with prices. Cyberpresso data: on October 25, 2026 Cyberpresso reached 27,000+ security readers, with a 30% open rate.

Methodology: McAfee+ prices, renewals and offer terms were checked on McAfee's US plans page on October 18, 2026. Bitdefender, Aura and Microsoft prices and terms were read on their own US pages the same day.

Cyberpresso runs no test lab, so nothing here is a detection or speed measurement. Every three-year total is our arithmetic from printed prices.

What is McAfee?

McAfee+ is McAfee's consumer subscription: antivirus and device protection bundled with identity monitoring, privacy tools and identity theft coverage. Every individual tier covers unlimited devices, and the Advanced card on the plans page states 1 user, so an individual plan is for one person's phones, laptops and tablets, not a household. The plan grid lists Scam Detector, antivirus, Secure VPN, web protection, identity monitoring and alerts, Social Privacy Manager, transaction monitoring, credit monitoring, identity restoration support, Credit Lock and Security Freeze, and McAfee Assist setup help. McAfee describes the tiers by what they add on top:
  • Premium: personal info scans and 24/7 monitoring.
  • Advanced: personal info removal, financial protection and identity restoration, plus up to $1M of identity theft coverage, which Premium does not include.
  • Ultimate: maximum personal info and financial protection, and double the coverage of the two lower tiers.
The practical difference between Premium and Advanced is scans versus removal: Premium tells you where your personal data sits on sites that sell it, and Advanced has McAfee take it down for you. If you would act on that list yourself, Premium is enough; if you would not, the removal is what you pay for. McAfee also sells starter plans under the Total Protection name, described as basic device and identity protection for individuals, and McAfee+ family plans for up to 6 family members. Their prices sit on separate pages, so check the current price on McAfee's site before comparing them with the individual tiers below.

How McAfee works

You buy a term, one year or two years, and the subscription renews automatically every year after it until you cancel. The renewal is always an annual charge at the standard rate, even when you started on the two-year term, so the two-year deal only fixes the price for the first 24 months.

McAfee's offer details set out the timing. It charges your payment method 30 days before an annual term expires, sends an email reminder 30 days before that charge, and asks you to cancel at least 31 days before expiration to avoid it.

In plain terms, the decision point is a month before the anniversary on your receipt, not the anniversary itself. Put it in a calendar on the day you buy.

McAfee also says renewal prices may change and that it will notify you in advance if they do. Vermont residents must opt in to auto-renewal. The plans page carries a 30-day money-back guarantee banner, which is your window to decide whether the suite is worth keeping before the first term runs on.

The savings McAfee shows are measured against the renewal price, not against a past sale price: its offer details say the savings figure is the gap between the introductory first-term price and the cost of each year after. So the "SAVE" label on each card is also a preview of what you pay from year two.

Installation covers all your devices under one account, and McAfee Assist helps with setup. Identity features, such as monitoring, credit tools and restoration support, run from that same account rather than a separate product.

McAfee key features

Unlimited devices on every McAfee+ tierEssential
Premium, Advanced and Ultimate all state unlimited device protection, for one user on the individual plans. A person with a phone, a tablet and two laptops pays the same as someone with one device.
Renewal charged 30 days earlyEssential
McAfee charges an annual renewal 30 days before the term ends and asks you to cancel at least 31 days before expiry. Missing that window means paying the full standard rate for another year.
Scans on Premium, removal on AdvancedEssential
Premium runs personal info scans and 24/7 monitoring; Advanced adds personal info removal, financial protection and identity restoration. Pay for Advanced only if you would not remove broker listings yourself.
Identity theft coverage up to $2M
Ultimate doubles Advanced's $1M of identity theft coverage to $2M; Premium includes none. The step to Ultimate is mostly a coverage and financial-protection decision, not a device one.
Secure VPN and Scam Detector in the plan grid
The McAfee+ grid lists Secure VPN for public Wi-Fi and Scam Detector for suspicious texts, sites and deepfakes. A buyer already paying for a VPN gets less extra value from the bundle.
Savings shown against the renewal
McAfee's savings label measures the gap between the intro price and the yearly renewal. Read the crossed-out figure on each card as next year's bill.

McAfee pricing

McAfee prints the intro price and the renewal side by side for every individual McAfee+ plan, read on McAfee's US plans page on October 18, 2026. The cheaper the tier, the bigger the jump at renewal.

On the one-year term, Premium renews at three times its intro price, the figures in the summary above. Advanced renews at a little over twice its intro. Ultimate has the smallest jump in relative terms, because its first-year discount is the smallest of the three, which makes it the least painful renewal but the most expensive plan in every year.

On the two-year term, Premium is $99.99 for both years, Advanced $179.99 and Ultimate $399.99, each paid upfront. After those 24 months, each plan renews annually at the same standard rate as the one-year version.

Over three years, the two-year term is cheaper on every tier. Premium bought yearly costs $349.97 over three years (the intro plus two renewals), against $249.98 on the two-year term plus one renewal. Advanced costs $489.97 against $379.98, and Ultimate $759.97 against $679.98.

The two-year Premium plan works out to about $50 a year for the first two years, which is the lowest price McAfee+ reaches.

For comparison, Bitdefender Total Security is $59.99 for the first year for 1 member and up to 5 devices, or $119.99 for 2 years, and its family plan is $79.99 for the first year for 5 members and up to 25 devices; Bitdefender says the renewal may be higher and does not print it on that page.

Aura is $12 a month on annual billing or $15 month to month for an individual, with 10 devices and identity theft insurance. Microsoft Defender Antivirus is built into Windows.

All prices exclude sales tax. McAfee family plans, Total Protection starter plans and Norton's current US prices: check the current price on each vendor's site before you compare.

McAfee pros and cons

What we like

  • Unlimited devices on Premium, Advanced and Ultimate, so a phone, tablet and two laptops cost the same as one device.
  • Every card prints its renewal next to the intro, so the year-two bill is visible before checkout.
  • Advanced adds personal info removal and identity restoration, and Ultimate doubles the identity theft coverage.

What could be better

  • Premium renews at 3 times its intro price, the steepest jump of the three tiers.
  • The renewal is charged 30 days before expiry, so you must cancel at least 31 days ahead to avoid it.

Who McAfee is for

McAfee+ fits one person with many devices who wants identity monitoring and coverage in the same subscription as the antivirus. Unlimited devices on every tier is a real advantage over Bitdefender's 5-device individual plan, and Advanced is the tier to pick if you want McAfee to remove your data from broker sites rather than only list where it appears.

The two-year Premium plan is the value buy: it is the lowest McAfee+ price per year and locks it for 24 months. Set a reminder for 31 days before it ends, because the renewal after that is the full standard rate.

Skip McAfee if you only want antivirus. Windows already ships with Microsoft Defender, covered in our is Windows Defender enough explainer, and the best free antivirus list covers the no-cost options.

Skip it too if identity theft protection is the main goal for a couple or a family: price Aura or read our identity theft protection comparison first.

Mac owners should check the best antivirus for Mac list before paying for a Windows-first suite.

The bottom line

Buy McAfee+ when you want antivirus, a VPN and identity monitoring for unlimited devices in one subscription, and you will actually use the identity tools. The two-year Premium plan is the best McAfee value for 24 months, and Advanced is worth the step only if you want McAfee to remove your data from broker sites.

Budget the renewal, not the intro. From year two, each McAfee+ tier costs its full standard rate, and the charge lands 30 days before the term ends, so cancel at least 31 days ahead if you plan to switch.

Choose Bitdefender when antivirus is the job and 5 devices are enough, Aura when identity theft protection for a family is the job, and Defender when you want nothing extra to pay for.

The Norton review, the cheapest antivirus list and the LifeLock review cover the rest of the shortlist, and Malwarebytes is the second-opinion scanner in our Malwarebytes review. Subscribe free to Cyberpresso for the next price change in your inbox.

Frequently asked questions

Is McAfee worth it in 2026?

McAfee is worth it if you want antivirus plus identity monitoring for unlimited devices and will use the identity tools. Its cheapest tier, McAfee+ Premium, triples in price at the first renewal, checked on McAfee's US plans page in October 2026. If you only want antivirus, Microsoft Defender is built into Windows and Bitdefender Total Security covers up to 5 devices from $59.99 for the first year.

How much does McAfee+ cost after the first year?

McAfee+ renews annually at $149.99 for Premium, $199.99 for Advanced and $279.99 for Ultimate. The same standard rates apply after a two-year term ends. The one-year intro prices are $49.99, $89.99 and $199.99, so the renewal is between about 1.4 and 3 times the first-year bill depending on the tier.

Is the McAfee two-year plan cheaper?

Yes, on every tier. Over three years, Premium costs $249.98 on the two-year plan plus one renewal, against $349.97 bought one year at a time. Advanced is $379.98 against $489.97, and Ultimate $679.98 against $759.97. The two-year plan is paid upfront, so the saving only holds if you are sure you will keep McAfee for 24 months.

How do I avoid the McAfee auto-renewal charge?

Cancel auto-renewal at least 31 days before your subscription expires. McAfee charges annual renewals 30 days before the term ends and sends an email reminder 30 days before that charge. Turning off auto-renewal right after purchase is the safest option if you plan to compare prices again next year; you keep protection until the paid term ends.

What is the difference between McAfee+ Premium, Advanced and Ultimate?

Premium runs personal info scans and 24/7 monitoring, with no identity theft coverage. Advanced adds personal info removal, financial protection, identity restoration and up to $1M of identity theft coverage. Ultimate offers McAfee's maximum personal info and financial protection with up to $2M of coverage. All three cover unlimited devices for one user, so the choice is about identity features, not device count.
