TL;DR

Duo Security is worth it in 2026 for MFA and single sign-on at a published price. Essentials is $3 per user per month, the free edition covers 10 users, and 20 people on Essentials pay $720 a year. Okta's workforce minimum is $1,500 a year, so those 20 people cost more there than they do on Duo.

Below the block threshold you buy licenses in tens, so 15 people pay that same yearly Essentials bill. Five of those seats sit empty, which is money for staff you have not hired. Paid plans on automatic billing get 100 credits per user per year, and a US text spends one. Treat a text login as a backup, not the rollout plan.

Price Essentials before Premier if a 20-person team needs a second factor and single sign-on. Premier is the remote-access edition, and most of that team only needs the prompt, the directory, and a trusted laptop.

Methodology: on October 16, 2026 we read Duo's edition page, its telephony credit docs, and the pricing pages for Okta, Microsoft Entra ID, JumpCloud and Ping. No trial account was opened, and each yearly figure is the printed per-user rate times the seats the block rule requires, times 12. Taxes, resellers and negotiated discounts are left out of those bills.

Toolradar data: Toolradar tracks 91 identity and access tools as of October 16, 2026, and it re-checked pricing on 69% of them in the prior 90 days, on its identity and access ranking.

The profiles next to this buy are Duo, Okta, JumpCloud and Entra ID.

If the identity provider is the thing you are leaving, the Okta alternatives page prices a 100-person bill. This page stays on Duo's own invoice, so the seat-block math stays in view.

The authenticator apps guide covers the phone app alone, a different purchase from a workforce directory.

What is Duo Security?

Duo, sold as Cisco Duo, is a workforce access product in four editions: Free, Essentials, Advantage and Premier. Free is MFA plus the authenticator app for a team that still fits the free cap.

Essentials is the first paid step that adds a directory, single sign-on, phishing-resistant MFA, passwordless sign-in, trusted endpoints and unlimited applications. That is the edition to budget once a prompt is not the whole job.

Advantage is the detection edition, and it pays off only when someone will read the risk signals, not when the gap is still a missing second factor. Premier adds VPN-less access to private resources and a check that an endpoint protection agent is present, so price it to replace a VPN, not to add a prompt.

It is not a password vault, and the edition bullets do not list joiner-mover-leaver automation, so automated offboarding has to live in Okta or Entra.

Keep shared admin passwords in a password manager, and put a hardware key on the Duo admin account using the YubiKey review and the hardware key guide.

How Duo Security works

The pricing page offers a 30-day trial, credit-card payment and a later switch of edition, so you can test the prompt before a card is charged. Users enroll the authenticator app, and a normal login is a push or a passcode from that app.

The telephony docs say both spend nothing, while a text or a phone call spends credits, so enroll people on the app first.

Owners and billing admins buy extra credits in the admin panel, 1,000 at a time, and the panel shows the cost before the purchase. Duo publishes no dollar amount for that top-up, so you cannot budget the refill until you are already an admin.

If the balance hits zero, texts and calls stop, while push, app passcodes and hardware tokens still work.

Trusted endpoints, from Essentials up, can require a managed device before access, which stops a personal laptop from passing an approved prompt. Risk-based authentication, on Advantage, changes the check from live risk signals. Premier's remote access is a separate rollout from a prompt you already have.

For a network-layer alternative to that job, see the zero trust platforms guide.

Duo Security key features

Free MFA inside the user capEssential
The free edition covers a small team at no charge, with MFA and the authenticator app, and it ends when the next hire breaks the cap. It does not include single sign-on, Duo Directory or phishing-resistant MFA, so the next buy is a block of licenses, not one extra seat.
Essentials SSO and phishing-resistant MFAEssential
Essentials adds Duo Directory, phishing-resistant MFA, passwordless sign-in with Duo Mobile and FIDO2, single sign-on, trusted endpoints and unlimited applications. Phishing-resistant MFA checks that the access device and the phone are near each other at login, which makes a remote approval harder.
License blocks of 10 and 25Essential
Under 100 users, Duo sells licenses in fixed groups, and past that line the blocks are 25. A team of 11 pays for 20 seats, and a team of 101 pays for 125.
Telephony credits for texts and calls
Paid editions on automatic billing get 100 telephony credits per licensed user each year, and unused credits do not roll over. A US text costs 1 credit and a US call costs 2 or 5, while free and education plans get none, which rules out an SMS-only rollout. Backup credits start at 1,000, with no dollar price printed.
Advantage risk checks and identity detection
Advantage adds Cisco Identity Intelligence: cross-identity visibility, posture management and identity threat detection. It also adds Duo Passport, session theft protection, Active Directory defense and risk-based authentication that changes the prompt from live risk signals.
Premier remote access and device trust
Premier adds VPN-less remote access to private resources, plus a device-trust check that looks for an endpoint protection agent. Price this edition when the job is reaching internal systems without a VPN, not when the job is a second factor on apps you already have.

Duo Security pricing

Essentials is the edition to budget for a team that has outgrown the free cap and still only needs sign-in. The editions page lists one monthly rate per paid tier and does not show a cheaper annual sticker, so monthly is the published deal.

A 20-person team lands on an exact pair of 10-seat blocks: $720 a year on Essentials, $1,440 a year on Advantage and $2,160 a year on Premier. A 15-person team buys that same Essentials year, so $180 of it is five empty seats until you hire into them.

Five people stay on the free edition, at no charge, the only no-charge option here for a company that small. The same five on Okta still hit the workforce yearly minimum, which makes Okta a poor fit at that size. JumpCloud's SSO package, which bundles SSO, MFA and a password manager, is $660 a year for those five at the annual rate.

At 101 users the block size steps up, and blocks of 25 apply past the lower threshold. The order is 125 Essentials seats at $4,500 a year, and twenty-four of those seats are empty. That empty slice is $864 of the year, so do not cross the line for a single hire.

The editions page never states the block size where the two rules meet, so confirm it before you sign on that count.

Okta Starter is billed annually and includes SSO, MFA, Universal Directory and 5 workflows. Twenty Starter seats come to less than the $1,500 minimum, so the invoice is that floor rather than the seat math.

Okta Essentials, at $17 per user per month, is $4,080 a year for 20 people, and that is where Adaptive MFA, lifecycle management and access governance sit. Core Essentials, at $14 per user per month, is $3,360 a year for the same headcount.

Adaptive MFA on Starter is an add-on Okta does not price in public, and Professional and Enterprise are contact-sales.

Entra ID Free is included with Azure or Microsoft 365 and lists MFA, unlimited SSO to SaaS apps and directory sync.

Conditional Access is on P1, paid yearly, which is $1,680 for 20 standalone seats. P1 is also included with Microsoft 365 E3 and Business Premium, so those tenants may have no separate P1 line. P2 is $10 per user per month paid yearly ($2,400 for 20) and is included with Microsoft 365 E5.

Entra ID Governance is a separate yearly per-user product at the same published rate as P1, for customers who already have P1 or P2. Private Access is $5 per user per month paid yearly, or $1,200 for 20, and it does not replace the MFA edition by itself.

The Suite is $12 per user per month paid yearly, and Microsoft says a P1 subscription is required, so the sticker is not the whole invoice.

JumpCloud lists an SSO package at $11 per user per month billed annually ($13 monthly), which is $2,640 a year for 20 people. That is a much larger bill than Duo Essentials once you also want the bundled password manager.

A la carte MFA is its own line, and a la carte SSO is priced like that MFA line, not like the package. There is no free plan, the trial is the only unpaid window, and a suspended user stays billable, so a leaver left that way keeps costing a seat.

PingOne for Workforce prints Essential and Plus only on a 5,000-user annual contract: $180,000 a year and $360,000 a year at that floor. Divide the Essential floor by that user minimum and 12 months and you land on Duo's Essentials rate, which a small team cannot buy. Ping offers a workforce trial for prospects already at that scale.

Prices checked on October 16, 2026 on Duo's editions page, Duo's telephony docs (updated September 3, 2026), Okta pricing, Microsoft Entra pricing, JumpCloud pricing and Ping pricing.

Duo Security pros and cons

What we like

  • The free edition includes MFA and the authenticator app for a team that still fits the cap.
  • Essentials includes SSO, Duo Directory, phishing-resistant MFA, passwordless sign-in and trusted endpoints.
  • Paid plans on automatic billing include 100 telephony credits per licensed user per year.

What could be better

  • Below the block threshold, licenses come in fixed groups, so 11 people buy 20 seats.
  • Backup credits have no printed dollar price, and the free edition receives no yearly credit allowance.
  • The edition bullets do not include lifecycle automation or access reviews.

Who Duo Security is for

Duo fits a company of 11 to 100 people that wants SSO and phishing-resistant MFA on a card, without an identity-governance project. The free edition fits a shop that only needs a prompt and still sits inside the cap.

Advantage fits the team that will use risk signals and identity threat detection. Premier fits the team replacing VPN access to private resources, and that team should also read the Cloudflare Zero Trust review before treating Premier as the only remote-access option.

Skip Duo when Microsoft 365 E3 or Business Premium already includes Entra ID P1, because you may already have Conditional Access. A second MFA product is then a second prompt for the same login.

Skip Duo when the requirement is access reviews or automated offboarding, which show up on Okta Essentials and on Entra ID Governance, not in Duo's edition bullets. Skip Premier if the only gap is a missing second factor, because you would pay for remote access you do not need.

A one-person IT shop pricing a whole stack, not only sign-in, can start from the security stack for an IT team of one.

The bottom line

Buy Duo Essentials when you are past the free cap, you do not already have Entra ID P1, and the job is SSO plus a phishing-resistant prompt. At 20 people the Essentials year undercuts Okta's workforce floor and a $1,680 standalone Entra P1 line, which makes Duo the cheaper published bill at that size.

Stay on the free edition while SSO can wait. Move to Advantage only when someone will use the risk signals, and move to Premier only when private resources have to be reached without a VPN.

Do not buy Duo to get access reviews or automated offboarding. Those live on Okta Essentials, at $4,080 a year for 20 people, or on Entra ID Governance on top of P1. Do not treat Ping's Essential floor as a small-team price, since $180,000 is a contract for a large workforce.

And do not plan an SMS-only rollout on the free edition, which receives no credit allowance.

A one-person security owner comparing privileged access, not only the prompt, should read the privileged access guide next. Cite this: Cyberpresso, "Duo Security Review 2026", October 2026.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Duo Security cost in 2026?

The free edition costs nothing inside its user cap. Essentials is the lowest paid monthly rate, Advantage is $6 per user per month, and Premier is $9 per user per month. Duo lists those as monthly rates and does not show a separate annual discount. Seats below the block threshold are sold in blocks of 10, so 20 people on Essentials pay $720 a year, and a headcount between blocks pays for empty seats.

Is Duo Security worth it for a small company?

Yes, when the company wants MFA and single sign-on and does not already have Microsoft Entra ID P1 through Microsoft 365 E3 or Business Premium. A second prompt on a login you already protect is wasted spend. A five-person team can stay on the free edition, and a 20-person Essentials order stays under Okta's yearly workforce minimum. It is a weak buy when the real requirement is access reviews or automated offboarding, which the edition bullets do not include.

Does Duo have a free plan?

Yes, Duo Free includes MFA and the authenticator app for up to 10 users, and it does not include single sign-on, Duo Directory or phishing-resistant MFA. It also receives no yearly telephony allowance, so an SMS-only rollout will not work on it, and the paid editions offer a 30-day trial. Education customers on any edition also receive no telephony allowance.

What does a 20-person team pay for Duo compared with Okta and Entra ID?

Twenty Essentials seats are an exact pair of license blocks, at $720 a year, so that headcount lands with no empty seats. Advantage for those 20 is $1,440 a year and Premier is $2,160 a year. Okta Starter seat math for 20 people falls under the $1,500 yearly minimum, so the invoice is that minimum rather than 20 times the seat rate. Standalone Entra ID P1 is $1,680 a year, unless Microsoft 365 E3 or Business Premium already includes P1.

Does Duo charge for text-message logins?

Texts and calls spend telephony credits, while a push or an app passcode does not, so the everyday login should be the app. A US text costs 1 credit and a US call costs 2 or 5 credits, depending on the type of phone. Paid accounts on automatic billing receive 100 credits per licensed user per year, and unused credits do not roll over. Backup credits can be bought from 1,000 upward, and Duo publishes no dollar price for them.
