TL;DR

For a 100-person company, Duo Essentials is the lowest-priced bundle that applies at that size, at $3 per user per month, or $3,600 a year. Okta Starter costs $6 per user per month, or $7,200 a year, on the same headcount.

Microsoft Entra ID Free costs nothing when you already pay for Microsoft 365 or Azure, but Conditional Access starts at Entra ID P1 at $7 per user per month. Authentik Enterprise is $5 per user per month billed annually, and Keycloak carries no license fee if you run it yourself.

JumpCloud's SSO package at $11 per user per month costs more than Okta Starter. PingOne for Workforce publishes its seat prices only on a 5,000-user annual minimum, so it has no 100-seat price. Prices were verified on vendor pages on 10 October 2026.

Key facts7 tools compared: Microsoft Entra ID, Keycloak, Duo Security, Authentik, JumpCloud, Google…
  • Updated: October 12, 2026
  • Top pick: Microsoft Entra ID (best for: Companies already paying for Microsoft 365 or Azure that need SSO and MFA first)
  • Top pick price as of October 12, 2026: Microsoft Entra ID: Free with Microsoft 365 or Azure; paid P1 and P2 seats are billed yearly per user.
  • 7 tools compared: Microsoft Entra ID, Keycloak, Duo Security, Authentik, JumpCloud, Google Cloud Identity, PingOne for Workforce
  • Keycloak (best for: Engineering teams that can run an identity server and want no license line): Free under the Apache-2.0 license; you pay for the servers and admin time that run it.
  • Duo Security (best for: Companies that want SSO and MFA for about half the Okta Starter seat price): Free for up to 10 users; paid Essentials, Advantage and Premier seats billed per user per month.
  • Authentik (best for: Teams that can host an identity provider and want offboarding built into the paid seat): Open source is free; Enterprise is billed per user, annually, plus a small fee per external user.

Okta's list price is the number to beat, because the seat count sets the bill. Okta suites are sold per user, per month, and billed annually, so the bill rises with every hire.

At 100 employees the Starter suite is $7,200 a year, and Essentials, the top suite with a public price, is $20,400.

Toolradar data: the October 2026 identity and access ranking evaluated 91 tools.

This page prices seven alternatives to Okta at one scenario: 100 employees, the base tier of each suite, 12 months of list price, in USD.

How we ranked: by yearly cost at that scenario, starting with the options that cost nothing, then the paid seats from cheapest to dearest, and ending with the two that publish no 100-seat price.

We did not run a hands-on lab.

Every price comes from a vendor pricing page read on 10 October 2026, and taxes, implementation and admin time are left out.

If the identity provider is one piece of a larger control set, the zero trust platforms guide covers the wider set, and the password manager guide covers the vaults that sit beside it.

Best for: Companies already paying for Microsoft 365 or Azure that need SSO and MFA first

PricingFree with Microsoft 365 or Azure; paid P1 and P2 seats are billed yearly per user.

+Entra ID Free adds MFA, unlimited SSO across any SaaS app and basic reports at no charge when a Microsoft 365 or Azure subscription already exists.
+Microsoft lists P1 as included with Microsoft 365 E3 and Business Premium, so a tenant on those plans may not need a separate P1 line.
+P2 adds risk-based access and privileged identity management, and P2 with the Governance add-on matches the Okta Essentials bill at 100 seats.
−Conditional Access is listed under P1, not Free, so a tenant on the free tier cannot write the access rules a security lead usually asks for.
−Governance is a separate add-on on top of P1 or P2, so a governance-heavy buyer pays $14 to $17 a seat.

Best for: Engineering teams that can run an identity server and want no license line

PricingFree under the Apache-2.0 license; you pay for the servers and admin time that run it.

+The Apache-2.0 license on the project's GitHub repository has no per-seat charge, so 100 users and 10 users carry the same license line.
+The team keeps user records and login logs on its own infrastructure, where a vendor-hosted Okta tenant keeps them on Okta's.
+It suits a company that already runs servers for internal apps and wants the identity layer on the same operating budget.
−Hosting, upgrades, backups and security patches are yours, and at 100 users those hours are the real cost of the option.
−There is no seat price to compare, so the honest comparison is an internal estimate of hosting and staff time, which depends on your stack.
Visit Keycloak →

Best for: Companies that want SSO and MFA for about half the Okta Starter seat price

PricingFree for up to 10 users; paid Essentials, Advantage and Premier seats billed per user per month.

+Essentials is $3,600 a year at 100 users, and it includes single sign-on, phishing-resistant MFA, Duo Directory and unlimited applications.
+The free edition covers up to 10 users, so a 10-person pilot costs nothing, where Okta's annual minimum would apply.
+Duo has three paid tiers, so a company can start on Essentials and move up to Advantage or Premier as its needs grow.
−Duo's Essentials plan lists no lifecycle or workflow automation, so removing a leaver is not an included feature at this tier.
−Duo sells licenses in blocks of 10 for under 100 users and blocks of 25 above 100, so the paid seat count rounds up to the next block.
Visit Duo Security →

Best for: Teams that can host an identity provider and want offboarding built into the paid seat

PricingOpen source is free; Enterprise is billed per user, annually, plus a small fee per external user.

+Enterprise at $5 per user per month, billed annually, comes to $6,000 a year for 100 employees, which is $1,200 below Okta Starter.
+Enterprise lists scheduled user offboarding, Microsoft Entra ID and Google Workspace integrations, and privileged access management.
+The open-source version has no license fee, so a team can start there and buy Enterprise when it needs offboarding or the Microsoft and Google integrations.
−The open-source tier comes with community support only, through GitHub and Discord, so a production outage has no vendor support on that tier.
−Enterprise Plus starts at $20k a year, far above a 100-seat Enterprise bill, so a 100-person company prices the Enterprise tier and not Plus.
Visit Authentik →

Best for: Companies that want device management and sign-in in one product and accept a higher seat

PricingSSO package billed annually per user, with a higher monthly rate; 30-day free trial, no free plan listed.

+Device Management, the SSO package and Device Identity Management are each published per user per month, billed annually.
+The product list prices Cloud Directory, SSO and MFA separately, so a buyer who wants only part of the stack can price it line by line.
+The 30-day free trial covers the full product, and 24x7 premium support is included during the trial.
−The SSO package comes to $13,200 a year at 100 users, $6,000 above Okta Starter, and the three-product stack at $9 is still above Okta Starter's rate.
−A suspended user stays billable as a normal user, so a leaver kept in suspension still costs a seat.
Visit JumpCloud →

Best for: Companies already on Google Workspace that can ask Google for more free licenses as they grow

PricingFree edition covers 50 user licenses by default; premium is billed through Google Workspace.

+The free edition provides 50 user licenses by default, and Google says more free licenses can be requested at no cost.
+Premium features are billed as part of a Google Workspace subscription, so a Workspace customer already has the billing relationship.
+Google publishes the license policy on its pricing page, which gives a dated first-party figure for a team of up to 50.
−The pricing page gives no premium per-user figure, so a 100-seat premium bill cannot be quoted from it.
−The free edition's feature list is not on the pricing page, so confirm SSO and MFA coverage on Google's feature documentation before a rollout.
Visit Google Cloud Identity →

Best for: Enterprises of 5,000 users or more that want workforce SSO and MFA

PricingEssential and Plus seats on an annual contract with a 5,000-user minimum.

+Essential and Plus are Ping's published seat tiers, both sold on the annual contract.
+The pricing page lists a 30-day free trial of PingOne for Workforce.
−The footnote sets both seat tiers on an annual contract for a 5,000-user minimum, so a 100-person company cannot buy at the published rate.
−Ping offers a free trial rather than a free tier, so a 100-person company gets a quote instead of a published bill.

What it is

An Okta alternative is an identity provider that signs staff into their apps with single sign-on, checks each login with multifactor authentication, and keeps a user directory. Okta sells this as suites priced per user.

For the authenticator app side of MFA, see the authenticator apps guide.

The Starter suite at $6 includes single sign-on, MFA, Universal Directory and 5 workflows. Essentials at $17 adds Adaptive MFA, Lifecycle Management, Access Governance and Privileged Access.

Core Essentials sits at $14 on Okta's list. Professional and Enterprise are quote-only, so the public numbers stop at Essentials.

A cheaper alternative has to cover the same job on the same headcount.

The LastPass alternatives guide applies that test to password vaults, where a free plan can stop at one device type.

Why it matters

Okta's suites are billed annually and carry a $1,500 annual contract minimum, which matters mainly for small teams. At 100 seats the seat price is the bill. Every seat that stays active bills at the same rate, so a leaver who is never removed keeps costing money.

Offboarding costs money on some products too.

JumpCloud's pricing page says a suspended user stays billable as a normal user, so a leaver who is suspended but kept in the system still takes a seat.

Put a hardware key on the identity admin account, since that login can change the rest of the tenant.

The YubiKey review covers one common option. Break-glass accounts need their own controls. Keep the recovery credentials for the identity provider in a secrets management tool, and not in the same tenant the identity provider protects.

Key features to look for

Seat math at 100 people
Duo Essentials costs half the Okta Starter bill at 100 seats, and Authentik Enterprise falls between the two.
Free tiers with a limit
Microsoft Entra ID Free adds MFA, unlimited SSO for SaaS apps and basic reports, but its Conditional Access rules sit in P1. Duo Free covers up to 10 users, and Google's free edition starts at 50 user licenses.
Who holds the directory
Okta Starter includes Universal Directory and Duo sells Duo Directory. Keycloak and the open-source Authentik are software you run on your own servers, so the directory and login logs stay with you.
Offboarding in the seat price
Authentik Enterprise lists scheduled user offboarding inside its paid tier. Okta Essentials adds Lifecycle Management, and Duo's Essentials plan lists no lifecycle automation.

Pricing

Prices were checked on vendor pricing pages on 10 October 2026, in USD. Okta's figures come from its pricing page. The table lists list prices per user per month.

Each yearly bill below multiplies that rate by 100 employees and 12 months.

At 100 employees, Okta Starter comes to $7,200 a year and Essentials to $20,400. Duo Essentials is $3,600, Authentik Enterprise $6,000, Microsoft Entra ID P1 $8,400, Entra ID P2 $12,000, and the JumpCloud SSO package $13,200.

Entra ID Free costs no license fee when a Microsoft 365 or Azure subscription is already in place.

Entra ID P2 with Governance lands on the same bill as Okta Essentials, though the feature sets differ. Duo Premier at $9 comes to $10,800.

The JumpCloud product stack of Cloud Directory, SSO and MFA, listed separately, adds to $9, still above Okta Starter's rate.

At 10 users, Okta's $1,500 annual contract minimum is more than double the $720 that 10 Starter seats cost, so a small company pays the minimum.

Duo Free covers 10 users at no charge. PingOne for Workforce has no 100-seat price because its footnote sets a 5,000-user minimum, and Google Cloud Identity's pricing page gives no premium per-user figure.

Mistakes to avoid
×Quoting Okta Starter for a team of 10 without the annual contract minimum, which applies to any Starter count under 21 seats.
×Taking Entra ID Free as a Conditional Access tool, when Conditional Access is listed under P1.
×Comparing JumpCloud's product lines with Okta's bundle, since Okta's bundle includes Universal Directory and JumpCloud prices the directory separately.
×Leaving a suspended leaver out of the seat count, because JumpCloud bills suspended users as normal users.
×Pricing Duo per seat under 100 users: Duo sells licenses in blocks of 10, so the bill rounds up.
×Assuming the free Authentik open-source tier includes vendor support, when it has community support only.
Expert tips
→Check whether the company already pays for Microsoft 365 E3 or Business Premium before it buys a Microsoft identity line, since P1 comes with those plans.
→Ask Okta and JumpCloud for a quote at your exact seat count before you compare rate cards.
→Price offboarding before you pick a product, because a suspended seat is still a billable seat on at least one platform.
→Put a dated price check in the renewal calendar, since list prices move and this page was verified on 10 October 2026.

The bottom line

Duo Essentials is the lowest-priced bundle that applies at 100 users, when the need is single sign-on, MFA and a directory.

Microsoft Entra ID is the free starting point for a company that already pays for Microsoft 365 or Azure, and P1 at $7 is the seat to price once Conditional Access becomes a requirement.

Choose Authentik Enterprise at $5 when a team can run its own identity server and wants scheduled offboarding inside the seat price.

Choose Keycloak when the license line must be zero and the team will carry the hosting cost itself.

Keep Okta when Adaptive MFA, Lifecycle Management and Access Governance are the requirement, and budget Essentials at $20,400 a year for 100 people rather than the Starter bill.

Choose JumpCloud for device management and sign-in in one product, and price its stack line by line rather than the package.

For the wider stack, see the hardware security keys guide and the MDM software guide.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Okta cost for 100 employees?
Okta publishes Starter and Essentials per user per month, both billed annually, with Essentials at $17. At 100 employees that is $7,200 a year for Starter and $20,400 a year for Essentials. Professional and Enterprise are quote-only, and Okta's annual contract minimum matters mainly for teams far below 100 seats.
What is the cheapest Okta alternative?
Among bundled paid seats with a published price that applies at 100 users, Duo Essentials is the lowest, at $3,600 a year. Microsoft Entra ID Free and Keycloak have no license fee, but Entra ID Free needs a Microsoft 365 or Azure subscription and Keycloak needs servers and staff. Authentik Enterprise is the next bundled option at $6,000 a year.
Is Microsoft Entra ID free?
Entra ID Free is included with Microsoft cloud subscriptions such as Azure and Microsoft 365. It covers multifactor authentication, unlimited SSO across any SaaS app, basic reports and self-service password change. Conditional Access starts at Entra ID P1, which Microsoft lists at $7 per user per month billed yearly, and P1 is included with Microsoft 365 E3 and Business Premium.
Does JumpCloud cost less than Okta?
Not for a like-for-like stack. JumpCloud's SSO package is $11 per user per month billed annually, or $13,200 a year for 100 users, against the Okta Starter bill. Its product list prices Cloud Directory, SSO and MFA separately at $3 each, and the three together add to $9 per user per month, still above Okta Starter's rate. JumpCloud offers a 30-day free trial, and its pricing page lists no free plan.
Is Duo a good replacement for Okta?
For single sign-on and MFA, Duo Essentials covers the basics with Duo Directory and unlimited applications. Duo's Essentials plan lists no lifecycle or workflow automation, so Okta Essentials, which includes Lifecycle Management, is the better fit when automated onboarding and offboarding are required. Duo Free covers up to 10 users at no charge, which suits a pilot.
Why does Okta's price look lower than the final bill?
Okta's published rates are per user, per month, billed annually, and its Workforce Identity contract carries an annual minimum. The Starter suite includes SSO, MFA, Universal Directory and 5 workflows, while Adaptive MFA, Lifecycle Management and Access Governance sit in Essentials. A quote for the feature set you need can cost more than the Starter rate suggests.
Does PingOne have a price for 100 employees?
No published one. Ping's Essential and Plus seats are on an annual contract with a 5,000-user minimum, so 100 employees fall outside the published tiers and need a quote.
