Surfshark is the cheaper pick in 2026: its Starter plan costs $67.23 for the first 27 months ($2.49/mo), against $94.23 for NordVPN Basic ($3.49/mo), and Surfshark allows unlimited devices where NordVPN stops at 10. Pick NordVPN when you want its Complete bundle, which adds a password manager and 1 TB of encrypted storage, or Prime's identity insurance and credit monitoring.

Both companies belong to the same group: Surfshark and Nord Security merged in February 2022 and say they still run as autonomous companies on separate infrastructure. So this is not a choice between rival owners, it is a choice between two price structures and two feature bundles. Prices below were read in USD on Surfshark's pricing page, Surfshark's renewal price list and NordVPN's pricing page on October 18, 2026.

What each plan costs on the two-year term

The two-year term is the one both vendors push, and both add 3 extra months, so the first bill covers 27 months. Surfshark adds VAT where it applies and NordVPN adds sales tax, so a taxed address pays more than these figures, which are verified on vendor pages as of Oct 2026.

Surfshark is cheaper at every tier. The gap is $27 on the VPN-only plan, $54 on the security bundle and $81 on the identity bundle over the first term. The middle row is the odd one: Surfshark One was running at the Starter price under a deal label in October 2026, so the antivirus bundle costs nothing extra for now. Treat that as a promotion that can end, not as the list price.

NordVPN also sells shorter terms. Basic is $65.88 for the first year ($5.49/mo) or $14.99 month to month, Complete is $77.88 for a year or $19.99 monthly, and Prime is $113.88 for a year or $29.99 monthly. Surfshark's month-to-month rates are $16.45 for Starter, $18.95 for One and $21.85 for One+. Paying monthly on either service costs several times the two-year rate, so it only makes sense if you need a VPN for a single trip or a short contract.

Renewal: the number that decides the three-year cost

Surfshark publishes its renewals; NordVPN does not print one on its pricing page. Surfshark's renewal list says a two-year plan renews for a one-year term at the standard rate, before tax: $79 a year for Starter, $99 for One and $119 for One+. It also emails you 30 days before a yearly or two-year term ends, and its terms reserve the right to A/B test displayed renewal prices.

NordVPN's terms say a subscription renews at "the price valid at the time of the automatic renewal", and the pricing page does not state that price. The one-year plans show crossed-out figures of $139.08 for Basic, $219.48 for Complete and $296.28 for Prime next to the intro price, but NordVPN does not call those its renewal rates. Read your NordVPN renewal in your account before the charge, not from a review or from a crossed-out number.

Here is what Surfshark costs over 39 months, which is the first 27-month term plus one renewal year at its published standard rate. We have no NordVPN column for this horizon because NordVPN prints no renewal price to add.

That makes Surfshark the only one of the two whose three-year bill you can work out before you pay. With NordVPN, the honest comparison is the first-term price above plus whatever your account shows at renewal, so set a calendar reminder a month before the 27 months end and decide then whether to renew or switch.

Devices: unlimited against 10

Surfshark allows unlimited simultaneous connections on every plan, and its pricing page says so plainly; the one exception is the free trial, limited to 3 devices. NordVPN covers 10 devices at once on Basic, Complete and Prime.

For one person with a laptop, a phone and a tablet, the cap never matters. It does matter for a household with a smart TV, consoles and several phones, or for a consultant who protects a parent's devices too. Ten is enough for most families; unlimited removes the counting.

What the bundles add beyond the VPN

The VPN-only tiers are close. Surfshark Starter includes the VPN, with its ad blocker and cookie pop-up blocker, plus Alternative ID, which generates a masked email address and a throwaway persona for sign-ups you do not trust. NordVPN Basic includes the VPN, scam and phishing protection through its DNS filtering, and Dark Web Monitor for up to 5 email addresses.

The bundles diverge:

• Surfshark One adds real-time antivirus with scheduled scans and webcam protection, Alert for email, credit card and ID leaks, and Surfshark Search.
• NordVPN Complete adds next-gen anti-malware, an ad and tracker blocker, email and call protection, a cross-platform password manager, 1 TB of encrypted cloud storage and Dark Web Monitor Pro for up to 8 email addresses plus phone, card and ID numbers.
• Surfshark One+ adds Incogni data removal and identity theft coverage up to $1M for US residents outside New York State.
• NordVPN Prime adds 1-bureau credit monitoring, a VantageScore 3.0 credit score, credit freeze assistance, identity theft insurance up to $1M and cyber extortion insurance up to $100,000.

NordVPN Complete is the bundle that replaces other subscriptions. On the top tier, Surfshark One+ is the data-removal plan and NordVPN Prime is the credit-and-insurance plan. A US buyer worried about people-search listings wants Incogni; one worried about new accounts opened in their name wants credit monitoring. Both sell Incogni and a dedicated IP as add-ons too.

Speed, servers and what we did not measure

Surfshark's pricing page lists 4,500+ servers in 100 countries, all upgraded to 10Gbps. NordVPN's servers page lists regular, obfuscated, double VPN, dedicated IP and P2P server types without a total on the pages we read.

Cyberpresso runs no test lab, so this page carries no speed benchmark. Throughput depends on your connection, the protocol and the server you pick, and both vendors offer a 30-day money-back guarantee, which is the honest way to measure speed on your own line. Use the window: connect from home and from your phone on the networks you actually use, then keep or refund.

Refund rules differ in detail. NordVPN's terms limit the money-back guarantee to the first 30 days after the initial purchase, and a renewed term is not refundable under it unless local law says otherwise. Surfshark's 30-day guarantee also starts at sign-up.
