VPN Free Trial 2026: Length, Card Rules and How to Claim It

Which VPNs still give a free trial in October 2026, how long each one runs, whether a card is needed, and how each refund window runs.

Two VPNs give a full seven-day trial on their own websites as of October 2026: Surfshark, for $0.00 up front on its 12- and 24-month plans, and NordVPN, for new accounts in 15 countries. ExpressVPN runs three days inside its iOS and Android apps. CyberGhost offers 24 hours on Windows and Mac with no card. Checked against each vendor's own pages on October 10, 2026.

Toolradar data: 18 of the 35 VPN tools we rank on our best VPN list have a free plan, as of October 2026. A free plan is a tier you can keep. A trial is a clock that starts at sign-up, and a security lead has to plan the test around that clock.

Review sites blur three different offers. A free trial gives you the paid service for a set number of days. A money-back guarantee charges you first and refunds the money if you cancel inside the window. A free plan costs nothing to keep and has no trial clock, but it has fewer features. The rest of this page treats trials and refunds as separate tests.

Which VPNs offer a free trial in October 2026

VPN Trial Where it starts and what it needs Refund after the trial
Surfshark 7 days Website, 12- and 24-month plans, card, PayPal or Apple Pay 30 days, 37 days in total
NordVPN 7 days Website, new accounts only, 1- and 2-year plans, card or PayPal 30 days for first-time customers, separate from the trial
NordVPN on Android 3 days Google Play, first-time Android users Through Google Play
ExpressVPN 3 days iOS and Android apps, payment method on the store account 30 days on website sign-ups, store purchases follow Apple or Google
CyberGhost 24 hours on Windows and Mac, 3 days on Android, 7 days on iOS No card on desktop, payment method on mobile 45 days on 26- and 6-month plans, 14 days monthly
Proton VPN No trial, permanent Free plan No card, one device 30 days on the paid VPN Plus plan

The card rule decides what a trial costs you. Surfshark and NordVPN take a card or PayPal at sign-up on their own sites, so the test is free only if you cancel before the seven days run out. CyberGhost's desktop trial is the only trial here that asks for no payment details, and it lasts one day. For the product judgments behind these terms, read our Surfshark review, NordVPN review, ExpressVPN review and Proton VPN review.

Surfshark and NordVPN: seven days on the vendor's site

Surfshark's trial costs $0.00 up front and runs for seven days on its 12- and 24-month plans. It accepts a credit card, PayPal or Apple Pay, and the trial works on three devices at once. Unlimited connections start only after you pay. To stop billing, switch off auto-renewal before day 7, and the vendor says you won't be charged a cent.

The 30-day money-back guarantee starts after the trial ends, which gives 37 days in total to decide. Starter lists at $2.49 a month on its 24-month plan, and the pricing page shows a $67.23 sale total for the first 27 months. Read the total on the checkout screen before you enter a card, because the pricing page figure covers the whole first term.

NordVPN's trial also runs seven days, but only for new customers with no earlier NordVPN subscription. It is limited to 1-year and 2-year plans, in 15 countries that include the United States, the United Kingdom, France and Japan. Each customer gets one. A credit card or PayPal is required, and Google Pay, UnionPay, Sofort and cryptocurrency grey the trial option out.

To cancel a NordVPN trial, log in to your Nord Account, open Billing, and click Cancel next to Free trial under Subscriptions. If you do nothing, the plan starts at the price shown when you signed up. The 30-day money-back guarantee is separate. First-time customers can ask support for a refund within 30 days of purchase, and App Store buyers go through Apple. The help article prints no price, so this page quotes none for NordVPN.

ExpressVPN and CyberGhost: app and desktop trials

ExpressVPN's trial lasts three days, and it starts only when you sign up through the iOS or Android app. The store account needs a valid payment method linked to it. Website sign-ups get a different deal: a 30-day money-back guarantee for first-time users, with refunds requested through 24/7 live chat. App-store purchases are excluded from that guarantee and fall under Apple's or Google's refund rules.

The trial page says the trial keeps the Internet Kill Switch without limits, which matters for the testing advice below. On the pricing page, the Basic plan lists at $2.99 a month on a 2-year term. That is a limited-time offer, billed at $83.72 for the first 28 months.

CyberGhost has the most trial types on this list. On Windows and Mac, the 24-hour trial needs no card and ends on its own. On Android the trial runs three days, and on iOS it runs seven. Both mobile trials need a payment method, and nothing is charged if you cancel during the trial. Cancel the Android trial through Google Play before it ends, and cancel the iOS trial in your subscription settings at least 24 hours before the end.

CyberGhost also gives the longest refund window in this group. The 26-month plan and the 6-month plan carry 45 days, while the monthly plan carries 14. The 26-month plan lists at $2.19 a month, billed as $56.94 across its 26 months. The 6-month plan lists at $6.99 a month.

Proton VPN has no trial, but a free plan you can keep

Proton VPN does not run a trial. Its Free plan needs no card, so there is nothing to cancel. It covers one device at a time, medium speed, and servers in 10 countries chosen at random. Proton's pricing page says the plan has no data limits and no artificial speed limits. Our free VPN ranking compares the permanent free tiers across vendors.

The paid VPN Plus tier adds the highest speed, servers in more countries and up to 10 devices at once, and it carries a 30-day money-back guarantee. For a security lead, the free plan works as a second account for a quick look at the app. It does not show how the paid tier behaves across a team.

What a trial can and cannot show a security lead

A trial tests one account on one plan, so it says little about a team rollout. Four things are worth checking before the clock runs out.

  • Device count. Surfshark's trial allows three devices at once, and ExpressVPN says its device allowance stays the same during the trial. Count the devices you need before you start.
  • Kill switch. ExpressVPN says its trial keeps the kill switch without limits. Mullvad's September warning about an Android leak that bypasses the kill switch is the reason to test that path on the platform you use. Read our report on the Mullvad leak.
  • Platform. A mobile trial tests the phone it runs on. CyberGhost's desktop trial covers Windows or Mac for 24 hours, so a laptop fleet needs its own test. Browser VPN extensions carry their own risk, as our report on fake Chrome VPN extensions shows.
  • Patch record. Check Point patched two critical VPN certificate flaws in September, so ask any gateway vendor for its patch record before a rollout. Read the Check Point report.

During the trial, run four checks. Disconnect the tunnel on purpose and see whether traffic leaks. Run a DNS leak test with the VPN on, then again after a reconnect. Test on the device and network you will actually use. Write the refund deadline in your calendar on day one. For a team buy, read our small-business VPN ranking before you open a trial.

How to claim a trial without a surprise charge

  1. Choose the route first. Surfshark and NordVPN start on their websites. ExpressVPN and CyberGhost's mobile trials start in the app store, and CyberGhost's desktop trial starts from its website without a card.
  2. Check eligibility before you pay. NordVPN needs a new account, Surfshark needs a 12- or 24-month plan, and the ExpressVPN money-back guarantee needs a first-time website purchase.
  3. Put the cancel deadline in your calendar. That is day 7 for Surfshark and NordVPN, and 24 hours before the end of CyberGhost's iOS trial.
  4. Cancel through the route you used. That means the Billing page for a NordVPN web trial, auto-renewal settings for Surfshark, Google Play for an Android trial, and subscription settings for iOS.
  5. If you miss the deadline, ask for the refund the same way. Web buyers contact the vendor's support, and app-store buyers go through Apple or Google.

Five details that catch buyers

  • Surfshark's trial covers only its 12- and 24-month plans, so a monthly plan has no trial.
  • NordVPN's trial is one per customer and only for new Nord Accounts.
  • ExpressVPN's 30-day guarantee does not cover app-store purchases.
  • CyberGhost's 24-hour desktop trial ends on its own, so a longer desktop test needs another vendor.
  • Card rules and day counts change, so check the checkout before you pay.

How we checked

We read each vendor's own trial page, pricing page or help article on October 10, 2026. Prices are the USD figures the vendor's page showed, before tax. The Toolradar count comes from our VPN ranking as of October 2026, and it counts only the 35 tools we rank. We did not start any trial for this page, so the card rules and refund windows are the vendors' published terms, not what a checkout showed us. The two pages that set most of these terms are Surfshark's free-trial page and ExpressVPN's VPN trial page.

FAQ

Is there a VPN free trial with no credit card?

CyberGhost's 24-hour trial on Windows and Mac needs no card. Its mobile trials need a payment method, but you pay nothing if you cancel during the trial. Proton VPN's Free plan also needs no card, though it is a plan rather than a trial.

How long is the Surfshark free trial in 2026?

Seven days, at $0.00 up front, on the 12- and 24-month plans. It accepts a credit card, PayPal or Apple Pay, works on three devices at once, and carries a 30-day money-back guarantee after day 7.

Does NordVPN have a free trial?

Yes. New NordVPN customers in 15 listed countries get seven days on 1-year and 2-year plans, with a card or PayPal. A separate three-day trial runs for first-time Android users who download the app from Google Play.

Is ExpressVPN's free trial only on phones?

Yes. The three-day trial starts in the iOS or Android app, with a payment method linked to the store account. Website buyers get a 30-day money-back guarantee for first-time users instead.

Is a money-back guarantee the same as a free trial?

No. A trial gives you the paid service for a set period, and you pay only if you keep it. A money-back guarantee charges you first and refunds you if you cancel inside the window, so it works as a test only if you track the deadline.
