Twingate vs Tailscale 2026: ZTNA Pricing for Small Teams
Twingate vs Tailscale in 2026: Twingate Teams is $5 and Business $10 per user a month billed yearly; Tailscale Standard is $8 and Premium $18, yearly costs compared.

Pick Twingate if you are a small business that wants free or cheap per-resource access control for staff, and Tailscale if your engineers need a mesh network with unlimited devices. Twingate Teams costs $5 per user a month billed yearly and its free Starter plan allows commercial use for 5 users. Tailscale Standard costs $8 per user a month, and its free Personal plan is for non-commercial use only.
The rest is detail that changes the bill. Twingate caps every plan by users, devices and protected resources, then charges more for Okta or Entra ID sign-in. Tailscale gives unlimited users and devices on every paid plan, but charges $1 a month for each tagged server past 50 and keeps network flow logs and log streaming on Premium. Prices below were read on Twingate's pricing page and Tailscale's pricing page on October 18, 2026, in US dollars.

Zero trust network access (ZTNA) is remote access that checks who the user is and what device they hold before connecting them to one specific resource, instead of dropping them onto the whole network like a legacy VPN. Both products do that, but they start from different places. Twingate is a broker: users reach resources through connectors you deploy. Tailscale is a WireGuard mesh: every device joins one private network, and access control lists decide who reaches what.
Toolradar data: Toolradar, the software directory we run, tracks 36 VPN tools as of October 17, 2026, and 58% of them are free, freemium or open source. Tailscale drew 762 side-by-side comparisons on Toolradar in the last 90 days, more than any other VPN tool in the VPN ranking. The product records are on Twingate's Toolradar page and Tailscale's Toolradar page.
Which free plan can a business actually use?
Twingate wins the free tier for a company. Starter is described as remote access for "personal projects and small startups", covers 5 users and includes peer-to-peer connections, split tunneling and conditional access controls. It has hard edges: one admin, 24 hours of logs and community support, so it suits a founding team protecting a handful of servers, not an audited business.
Tailscale's Personal plan is larger, with 6 users and unlimited devices, but the pricing FAQ limits it to non-commercial use. A tailnet created with a custom company domain is treated as business use and starts a 14-day Enterprise trial, after which you pick a paid plan. A five-person company that wants Tailscale should therefore budget for Standard from day 15.
Twingate's own non-commercial tier, Home, costs $15 a month for up to 7 users and adds exit networks and device posture checks for a homelab. It is irrelevant to a business buyer and is left out of the cost tables below.
What each headcount pays per year
These totals are our multiplication of the list prices above, before tax, for a full year. Twingate's yearly rates are used because they are the cheapest way to buy it, and Tailscale's monthly seat price is multiplied by 12 because its page lists no yearly rate.
| Team size | Twingate Teams (yearly) | Twingate Business (yearly) | Tailscale Standard | Tailscale Premium |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 users | $0 on Starter, or $300 | $600 | $480 | $1,080 |
| 25 users | $1,500 | $3,000 | $2,400 | $5,400 |
| 100 users | $6,000 | $12,000 | $9,600 | $21,600 |
| 150 users | Not available (cap is 100) | $18,000 | $14,400 | $32,400 |
On seats alone, Twingate Teams is the cheapest paid plan at every size it allows, $900 a year under Tailscale Standard at 25 users. The comparison flips when identity enters it. A company on Okta or Microsoft Entra ID needs Twingate Business, because Teams lists SSO via Google Workspace while Okta and Entra ID SSO are listed on Business, and at 25 users that is $3,000 against $2,400 for Tailscale Standard, which accepts SSO from any identity provider.
Monthly billing widens the gap. Twingate Business costs $12 per user on a monthly plan, so the same 25 people pay $3,600 a year, and Twingate labels its yearly option as 15% cheaper on both Teams and Business. Tailscale bills seats at the start of each month and lets you raise the count as you grow, with annual invoicing reserved for Enterprise.
The limits that cost more than the seat
Twingate's caps are about people and devices. Every paid plan allows 5 devices per user, Teams stops at 100 users and Business at 500, and protected resources (network addresses behind a connector) stop at 100 on Teams and 300 on Business. A 120-person company outgrows Teams on headcount alone and moves to Business at double the seat price, which in the table above costs $18,000 a year for 150 users against Tailscale Standard's $14,400.
Tailscale's meter is servers. User devices are free and unlimited on every plan, but tagged resources such as servers, exit nodes and subnet routers are capped at 50, then $1 a month each. A company tagging 150 servers pays $100 a month, or $1,200 a year, on top of seats. Ephemeral nodes for CI jobs get 1,000 minutes a month on Standard and 10,000 on Premium, with overages through sales.
The two meters measure different things, so map your estate before you compare. A team of 40 developers with laptops, phones and test devices may pass Twingate's 5-device limit, while an infrastructure team running hundreds of tagged VMs will feel Tailscale's resource fee first. Identity, device posture and access policy
Tailscale gives more identity for less on its entry paid plan. Standard includes SSO with any identity provider, SCIM user and group provisioning, advanced user roles and device posture integrations with MDM, EDR and XDR products. Twingate keeps Okta, Entra ID and JumpCloud provisioning and endpoint integrations for Business.
Twingate gives more access policy for the money. Teams already includes native device posture checks, MFA for bastion hosts and SSH, SaaS application gating and automated least-privilege policies. Business adds usage-based and just-in-time access policies, secure service accounts for CI pipelines, and exit networks, with DNS filtering available as an add-on. Its posture integrations name CrowdStrike, Intune, Jamf, Kandji and SentinelOne.
Tailscale places just-in-time access, geolocation posture and advanced Tailscale SSH on Premium. Basic Tailscale SSH is on every plan, limited to 5 hosts on Personal. A team that needs time-boxed admin access therefore pays $10 per user at Twingate or $18 at Tailscale, which matters more than the $3 gap between the entry plans. Teams that need full session recording should also price the privileged access management tools.
If your device fleet runs through an MDM, check the integration list against your tool on the MDM software ranking before choosing.
Logs an auditor will ask for
Twingate keeps logs longer on the plans small teams buy, and Tailscale streams them on Premium. Twingate retains network logs for 7 days on Teams, 30 days on Business and 12 months on Enterprise, with admin audit logs and real-time network analytics in the console. Seven days is too short for most incident investigations, so a team with a compliance target should treat Business as Twingate's real floor.
Tailscale includes webhooks and configuration audit logs from Standard, while network flow logs and log streaming to a SIEM sit on Premium. A SOC that needs connection-level records in its SIEM pays the Premium seat, which is $5,400 a year at 25 users. Price your log pipeline separately with our guide to what a SIEM costs.
Architecture: broker versus mesh
Twingate deploys connectors inside each private network, groups them into remote networks and routes users to individual resources by DNS name or address. Connectors cluster for failover, and traffic goes peer to peer where possible, through 12 relay locations on Starter and Teams and 21 on Business and Enterprise when it cannot. Users never join a shared network, which keeps lateral movement narrow by design.
Tailscale puts every device on one WireGuard mesh with MagicDNS, subnet routers and exit nodes on every plan. Access control lists define who reaches what, and Premium adds Kubernetes ingress and egress plus regional routing. The mesh suits engineers who connect machines to machines, while the broker suits an IT lead who wants employees to reach a list of internal apps without seeing the network behind them.
Who should pick which
Pick Twingate Starter if you are a company of five or fewer and want ZTNA for free under a commercial license. Pick Twingate Teams for up to 100 people on Google Workspace who need posture checks and MFA on SSH at the lowest seat price here. Pick Twingate Business when you sign in through Okta or Entra ID, need just-in-time access or service accounts, and want 30 days of logs.
Pick Tailscale Standard when engineers run many devices, you use any identity provider, or the company will pass 100 people soon, because it never caps users or devices. Pick Tailscale Premium when network flow logs must stream into a SIEM. How we compared
We read both vendors' pricing pages and their feature comparison tables on October 18, 2026, in US dollars, and computed yearly totals at 5, 25, 100 and 150 users by multiplying the published per-user prices. Twingate's yearly rates were used where it publishes them, and Tailscale's monthly seat price was multiplied by 12. Enterprise tiers on both sides publish no price and are left out of the totals. Dupple runs no test lab, so every claim here is what the vendors publish, not a measurement. Cite this: Cyberpresso, "Twingate vs Tailscale 2026: ZTNA Pricing for Small Teams", October 2026.
