Tailscale Pricing 2026: Free, Standard and Premium Plans

Tailscale pricing in 2026: Personal is free for 6 users, Standard costs $8 and Premium $18 per user a month, with bills at 10, 25 and 100 users and the add-ons.

Tailscale Pricing 2026: Free, Standard and Premium Plans

Tailscale costs nothing on the Personal plan, which covers up to 6 users with unlimited devices. Business plans are priced per seat: Standard is $8 per user a month and Premium is $18, while Enterprise is quoted. A 25-person company pays $2,400 a year on Standard and $5,400 on Premium, before any tagged servers beyond the 50 included.

That makes Tailscale cheap for a small team and expensive in a specific way for a large one: the seat price is low, but the security controls an auditor asks about (log streaming, network flow logs, just-in-time access) sit on Premium, which costs more than twice as much. This page prices every plan, computes the bill at three headcounts, lists the charges outside the seat and sets Tailscale against Twingate, NordLayer, Cloudflare and ZeroTier on the same team. Every figure was read on Tailscale's pricing page on October 17, 2026, in US dollars.

Toolradar data: Toolradar, the software directory we run, tracks 36 VPN tools as of October 17, 2026, and Tailscale is the most cross-shopped of them, listed as an alternative to 42 other tools. It is also the most compared VPN tool on Toolradar over the last 90 days, with 761 side-by-side comparisons, according to the VPN ranking. The product record is on Tailscale's Toolradar page.

What changed in April 2026

Tailscale moved its business plans to seat-based pricing on April 8, 2026. The pricing announcement explains the reasoning plainly: customers want to know what next month's bill will look like, and procurement teams compare seat-based offers. Starter was renamed Standard with more features and a slightly higher seat price, while Premium kept its price and gained features.

Existing customers are not forced to move. The announcement says current plans keep their price for at least 12 months, with no forced transitions, so a team on the old Starter plan can stay put until its renewal and compare. Personal Plus, the paid tier for small personal networks, is being retired, and the free Personal plan grew to six users to absorb it.

For a security buyer, the practical effect is that a Tailscale bill now tracks headcount rather than device count. A company with few people and many machines benefits. A company with many contractors who log in once a quarter pays a seat for each of them, which is why seat hygiene matters (more on that below).

Personal: free, and what the limits mean

The Personal plan is free forever for up to 6 users in one tailnet, with unlimited devices. Tailscale describes it as suited to a homelab or a home VPN, and the plan includes 50 tagged resources, 1,000 ephemeral minutes a month, basic ACLs with 3 groups and Tailscale SSH on up to 5 hosts.

The limit that stops a business is not the device count. It is the 3 ACL groups and the six-person cap, which rule out any segmentation between, say, engineering, finance and contractors. A two-founder startup can start on Personal, but the first hire who should not reach the production database is the signal to move to Standard. Open-source projects with an OSI license can use Tailscale free through their GitHub organization, per Tailscale's free plans and discounts docs.

Standard: the cheap seat, and its ceiling

Standard costs $96 per user a year and covers unlimited users and devices. It adds up to 10 ACL groups and SCIM provisioning, so users and groups sync from the identity provider instead of being managed by hand, which closes the most common offboarding gap in a small company.

The ceiling is visibility. Standard keeps the same 50 tagged resources and 1,000 ephemeral minutes as Personal, and it does not include log streaming or network flow logs. A team that has to show an auditor who reached which server, and when, will find that evidence on Premium. If a cyber insurance questionnaire or a SOC 2 control asks for network access logs, budget for the higher tier from the start rather than discovering it during the audit.

Premium: where the security controls live

Premium costs $216 per user a year, more than double Standard, and the extra $10 per user a month buys the controls a security team actually reports on. It raises ACL groups to 300, adds advanced Tailscale SSH, network flow logs, log streaming to a SIEM, just-in-time access to resources and regional routing, and lifts ephemeral resources to 10,000 minutes a month.

Just-in-time access is the feature that justifies the price for most buyers. It lets an engineer request access to a production resource for a limited window instead of holding standing access, which is the control auditors increasingly ask for. Log streaming matters to any team with a SIEM, because a remote-access tool that does not feed the SIEM is a blind spot in incident response. Teams without a SIEM or an auditor can stay on Standard and save $120 per user a year.

Enterprise: custom pricing

Enterprise is quoted. It includes everything in Premium, plus a solutions engineer for consultation and implementation, a custom master services agreement and payment by invoice, which is what procurement departments need. The trial for business plans runs 14 days with full Enterprise feature access, started by signing up with a custom domain.

What Tailscale costs at 10, 25 and 100 users

Our arithmetic on the list seat prices, paid monthly, before taxes and before resources beyond the included allowance:

Users Standard a month Standard a year Premium a month Premium a year
10 $80 $960 $180 $2,160
25 $200 $2,400 $450 $5,400
100 $800 $9,600 $1,800 $21,600

The gap between the tiers grows linearly: at 100 users, Premium costs $12,000 a year more than Standard. That is the number to put against the cost of the alternative, which is usually a separate logging pipeline or an access-request tool bolted onto Standard.

Cyberpresso's daily brief covers the remote-access flaws that make these line items urgent; the signup is at the end of this page.

The charges outside the seat

Three lines can move a Tailscale bill beyond the seat count.

Tagged resources. Servers, containers and other non-human nodes run as tagged resources. Every plan includes 50, and each additional one costs $1 a month. A 25-person company running 80 tagged servers pays $30 a month on top of its seats, so the Standard bill becomes $230 a month and Premium $480. Infrastructure-heavy teams should count their servers before comparing per-user prices.

Mullvad exit nodes. The add-on that routes traffic through Mullvad's VPN servers costs $5 a month for every 5 devices. It is a privacy feature, not an access control, and most companies will not need it.

Seats that fill up. A user occupies a seat when they first log in to the admin console or first authenticate a device. If more users log in than the seats you bought, the seat count rises automatically and the extra is prorated. Vacant seats can be reused by a different user within the same billing period, so removing departed users promptly keeps the count down.

Eligible charities, not-for-profit organizations and educational institutions get 50% off list prices, which brings Standard to $4 per user a month by our arithmetic.

Tailscale against the alternatives at 25 users

Prices read on each vendor's own pricing page on October 17, 2026, monthly list prices unless stated:

Product Entry paid price 25 users a month Notes
Tailscale Standard $96 per user a year $200 50 tagged resources included
Tailscale Premium $216 per user a year $450 Log streaming and just-in-time access
Twingate Teams $5 per user $125 Up to 100 users; Business is $10; yearly billing saves 15%
NordLayer Lite $8 per user $200 5-user minimum; Core $11, Premium $14; dedicated IP gateway +$40 a month on Core and Premium
Cloudflare Access pay-as-you-go $7 per user, paid annually $175 Free plan available
ZeroTier Essential $18 a month flat Flat fee plus devices 10 devices included, then $2 each; priced by device, not user

Twingate is the cheapest per-seat paid option at this size, and Cloudflare undercuts Tailscale Standard on an annual commitment. Tailscale's case rests on its mesh design and its free tier for very small teams, not on the lowest seat price. ZeroTier prices by device rather than by user, so it wins for a small team running many machines and loses for a large team with one laptop each. The Tailscale alternatives page works through each rival in detail, and the NordLayer review covers the closest seat-for-seat competitor.

Is Tailscale worth the price?

For a team under about 25 people replacing a legacy VPN appliance, Standard is good value: its seat buys SCIM provisioning and ACLs without a concentrator to patch, and edge VPN appliances such as Ivanti Connect Secure have been a steady source of critical flaws this year. The calculation changes for regulated teams, because the audit evidence lives on Premium, and at that price Cloudflare and Twingate's Business plan deserve a quote. FAQ

How much does Tailscale cost in 2026?

Personal is free for up to 6 users with unlimited devices. Standard costs $8 per user a month and Premium $18 per user a month, with unlimited users and devices on both. Enterprise is custom-priced. Each plan includes 50 tagged resources, and each additional one costs $1 a month.

Is Tailscale free for business use?

The Personal plan is designed for personal use such as a homelab or home VPN, and it caps at 6 users with 3 ACL groups. Businesses that need more users, more access groups or SCIM provisioning move to Standard. Open-source projects with an OSI license can use Tailscale free through their GitHub organization.

What is the difference between Tailscale Standard and Premium?

Premium adds network flow logs, log streaming, just-in-time access, advanced Tailscale SSH, regional routing, up to 300 ACL groups and 10,000 ephemeral minutes a month. Standard has up to 10 ACL groups and 1,000 ephemeral minutes. The difference is $10 per user a month, or $12,000 a year at 100 users.

Did Tailscale raise its prices?

Partly. On April 8, 2026, Tailscale moved business plans to per-seat pricing, renamed Starter to Standard with a slightly higher seat price and more features, and kept Premium at the same price. Existing customers keep their current plan and price for at least 12 months.

Does Tailscale offer discounts?

Yes. Eligible charities, not-for-profit organizations and educational institutions receive 50% off list prices; US nonprofits need 501(c)(3) status. Business plans also come with a 14-day trial with full Enterprise features.

Is Tailscale cheaper than Twingate?

No, not at list price. Twingate Teams costs $5 per user a month for up to 100 users, below Tailscale Standard's seat, so 25 users cost $125 a month on Twingate and $200 on Tailscale. Tailscale's free Personal plan covers 6 users, against Twingate's free Starter for 5.
