Solar cameras that work without a subscription
Eight of the nine record with no paid plan, to a card or built-in memory; the Arlo needs its SmartHub and a USB drive. Free person alerts are stated for the top five: Reolink ties person detection to "without Subscription Fees", Tapo to "No Subscription Required", and the S220's "No Monthly Fee" line names its on-device AI. The other pages tie "no monthly fees" to storage, or put person alerts in a plan.
What a plan costs over 12 and 24 months
| Plan | Monthly | 12 months, monthly | 24 months, monthly | Annual | 12 months, annual | 24 months, annual |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| eufy Plus Member (C37 cloud backup) | $15.00 | $180.00 | $360.00 | $135.00 | $135.00 | $270.00 |
| Wyze Cam Plus, per camera | $2.99 | $35.88 | $71.76 | Not stated on the page | Not stated | Not stated |
| Arlo Secure, entry price | Not stated on the page | Not stated | Not stated | $95.88 ($7.99 a month billed annually) | $95.88 | $191.76 |
Cyberpresso data: computed from vendor prices read November 4, 2026. Arithmetic: 15 times 12 is 180 and times 24 is 360; 2.99 times 12 is 35.88 and times 24 is 71.76; 7.99 times 12 is 95.88, twice is 191.76. eufy's annual rate is not 12 times its monthly rate, so both are shown. Reolink Cloud, Tapo Care and ARCCTV's paid cloud have no price on the pages read. microSD card and USB drive prices are left out of every cost.

How to choose
- Five points: the Argus 3E, or the 5MP Argus Eco at $5 more.
- Lowest price: the Tapo C402 Kit at $44.99, with free person detection.
- Pan and tilt: the Tapo C610 Kit at four points, or the Wyze Solar Cam Pan 2K at $79.98.
- No card to buy: the S220, which stores 8GB on the camera.
- 4K: the eufyCam C37, with a detachable 3W panel.
- Fewest recharges: the Arlo Essential Solar and its 14,790mAh battery, with the SmartHub.
- Panel built into the camera, under $50: the ARCCTV C3 Pro at $48.99, which scores one.
For wired systems, see the PoE security camera system guide or the video doorbell guide. A wider list without solar is in the best security camera without subscription guide. Account protection starts with a 2FA authenticator app, a password manager and encrypted cloud storage.
Methodology: how the order is set
Gate: a battery camera sold with a solar panel (in the box, built in, or as the vendor's one-camera bundle), current and in stock on the vendor's US store, with a readable price and a vendor-stated panel wattage.
Score, one point each: (1) records with no paid plan, on a card, built-in storage, or a hub whose price is added; (2) person detection stated free; (3) end-to-end encryption for video, on by default; (4) account two-factor login; (5) a disclosure page returning HTTP 200; (6) a US or worldwide security-update period.
Order: score, then the ranked price (camera plus panel, no code), then panel wattage, then battery. A sale price ranks unless it ends before November 7, 2026. At most two numbered picks per brand; a brand's other models that pass are listed below the ranking with their score and price. Colours of one camera are one pick. The list stops at nine. Links never change the order.
Price basis: the higher of the page price and the cart price for one camera. Carts matched the page for the Tapo, Wyze, Arlo and ARCCTV picks; the Reolink and eufy carts could not be read.
Rule calls, applied to every brand:
- A wattage counts when the vendor gives it to the panel, on the product page or its comparison table. A named panel counts at the wattage on its own US page or store entry: Tapo A201 2.5 W (the page figure; Tapo's V2.30 datasheet says 3 W), Reolink Solar Panel 3W. A generic or integrated panel with no wattage fails, as does "Battery Power: 5000 mAh, 3W, 5V".
- A brand-wide end-of-life policy covering the model in the US that commits to a minimum period counts for point 6 (Arlo, Reolink); Wyze's "will typically seek to allow" does not.
- Point 2 means person alerts, and counts only when the no-plan statement names the detection.
- A hub counts for point 1 when the vendor lists it for the camera.
- A free cloud history is not local storage; UK or EU update dates do not count; microSD card prices are left out; where a live brand's wording reads two ways, the stricter reading applies.
No one-camera Argus 3E or Argus Eco listing was found on Amazon, so their links go to Reolink. No camera was tested.
FAQ
Do solar security cameras work in winter?
Arlo's page says "a fully charged camera may drop to a low level during winter" and "will recover as sunlight increases in spring". No page gives a winter runtime.
Do solar security cameras store video locally?
Eight of the nine do on the camera: microSD up to 512GB on both Tapo kits and the Wyze; up to 256GB on the C37; up to 128GB on the Argus 3E, the Argus Eco and the ARCCTV C3 Pro; and 8GB built in on the S220. The Arlo records to a USB drive on its SmartHub.
Is there a solar security camera without a subscription?
Yes. The top five record locally and send person alerts with no plan; plans are optional.
How many watts of solar panel does a security camera need?
No vendor page here gives a sizing rule. Stated panels run from 0.9W on the S220 to 3W on both Reolinks and the C37, with 1.2W on the Arlo, 1.7W on the C3 Pro, 1.8W on the Wyze and 2.5W on the Tapo A201; outside the ranking, up to 12W on Reolink's Solar Panel 3.
Which of these state how long they get security updates?
Reolink commits to security updates for at least three years after end of life; Arlo to one year beyond an end-of-life date at least four years after manufacturing stops. Wyze says only that it will "typically seek to allow" a year; Tapo, eufy and ARCCTV state none.
Do any of these use end-to-end encryption by default?
None of the nine. eufy's Advanced Encryption is end-to-end only when a user turns it on, per eufy's privacy commitment; Tapo names AES 128-bit and TLS 1.2; ARCCTV states no default.
