TL;DR

Short answer: for most small and mid-size firms, the best cybersecurity starts with Microsoft 365 Business Premium at $22 per user a month, then adds Huntress Managed EDR for a 24/7 team on the laptops and 1Password Business for the shared logins. Virtru encrypts privileged email, and Backblaze keeps an off-site copy of every computer.

For a 20-person firm, that core stack plus KnowBe4 training comes to $1,143.60 a month at list prices, or about $57 per person. Drop the managed endpoint line and the bill falls to $963.80, but nobody watches the alerts at night.

  • Huntress Managed EDR (best for: Firms whose IT contractor cannot answer an endpoint alert at 2 a.m): $8.99/endpoint/mo MSRP; no minimum through an MSP, 50 seats direct or via a reseller
  • 1Password Business (best for: Firms sharing logins for court e-filing, bank portals and client extranets across attorneys and staff): $8.99/user/mo billed yearly; Teams Starter Pack $24.95/mo for up to 10 users
  • Virtru (best for: Partners who email settlement drafts, medical records or deal documents to clients outside the firm): Starter $119/mo for 5 users, billed annually; Business $219/mo for 5 users

Toolradar data: Toolradar, the software directory we run, evaluated 865 security tools for its October 2026 security ranking. This page keeps nine that fit a law firm without a security team and prices each one for the same 20-person practice, from vendor pricing pages checked on 17 October 2026.

Law firms are a named target, not a side effect. The FBI warned in May 2025 that the Silent Ransom Group has consistently targeted US law firms since spring 2023, calling staff while posing as IT support and copying files through remote access tools. Our report on the leaked Silent Ransom Group chats shows the same crew sending people into offices in person.

That changes the shopping list. A firm needs phishing-resistant sign-in, someone watching the laptops, encrypted client email and a backup the attacker cannot delete, before it needs anything clever.

1 Microsoft 365 Business Premium logo
Top Pick

Microsoft 365 Business Premium

The foundation: Entra ID P1, Intune, Defender for Business, Defender for Office 365 and Purview in one licence.

Pricing
$22/user/mo paid yearly; $18.79 without Teams

Best for: Firms already on Outlook and Word that want identity, device and email security on one bill

Pros

  • One licence bundles Entra ID Plan 1 sign-in controls, Intune Plan 1 device management with remote wipe, Defender for Business and Defender for Office 365 phishing protection.
  • Purview data security is in the same seat, so labelling a privileged folder does not need a separate data protection contract.

Cons

  • The tools arrive switched off or on defaults. Someone has to configure conditional access, device compliance and the mail policies, or the seat buys Office and little else.
  • Defender alerts land in a console nobody reads at night unless a managed service sits on top.
2 Huntress Managed EDR logo

Huntress Managed EDR

A 24/7 SOC on the laptops, with active remediation, incident reports and managed antivirus in the rate.

Pricing
$8.99/endpoint/mo MSRP; no minimum through an MSP, 50 seats direct or via a reseller

Best for: Firms whose IT contractor cannot answer an endpoint alert at 2 a.m.

Pros

  • Human-led detection and response runs around the clock, so a remote access tool installed during a fake IT call gets a response before the next business day.
  • Managed ITDR at a $4.80 MSRP per identity watches Microsoft 365 accounts for suspicious logins and policy changes, the path to a hijacked partner mailbox.

Cons

  • Bought direct or through a reseller, Huntress requires 50 seats per product, so a 20-laptop firm pays for 50 unless an MSP resells it.
  • The standard term is 12 months and Huntress offers no multi-year price protection.
3 1Password Business logo

1Password Business

A business vault with single sign-on, directory provisioning and custom activity reports for audit questions.

Pricing
$8.99/user/mo billed yearly; Teams Starter Pack $24.95/mo for up to 10 users

Best for: Firms sharing logins for court e-filing, bank portals and client extranets across attorneys and staff

Pros

  • Business provisions users from Azure AD (Entra), Google Workspace or Okta, so a departing associate loses vault access when their account is closed.
  • Custom business reports cover account activity, which answers who opened the trust account login and when.

Cons

  • Its per-seat rate is more than double Bitwarden Teams, a gap that adds up across 20 people.
  • The cheaper Teams Starter Pack caps at 20 members, so a firm planning to grow past that buys Business from the start.
4 Virtru logo

Virtru

End-to-end encrypted email and attachments inside Outlook or Gmail, with expiry and revocation after sending.

Pricing
Starter $119/mo for 5 users, billed annually; Business $219/mo for 5 users

Best for: Partners who email settlement drafts, medical records or deal documents to clients outside the firm

Pros

  • Recipients open encrypted mail with no username or password, which keeps clients from forwarding the draft through personal email instead.
  • Senders can set expiration dates and revoke access after a message is sent, useful when a draft goes to the wrong opposing counsel.

Cons

  • Packs come in 5 users and extra seats are priced on request, so encrypting the whole firm needs a quote.
  • Encrypted file sharing and SIEM audit export start on Business, not on the Starter plan.
5 Backblaze Business Backup logo

Backblaze Business Backup

Continuous off-site backup of every computer, with private key encryption and free restore drives by mail.

Pricing
$99/computer/year; unlimited data from computers and external drives

Best for: Firms whose attorneys keep working files on laptops rather than only in a document management system

Pros

  • Unlimited data per computer, including connected external drives, means a litigation partner's discovery folder is covered without a storage quote or a cleanup project first.
  • Private key encryption and two-factor sign-in protect the backup account, and an encrypted USB drive with the data ships free if returned within 30 days.

Cons

  • Enhanced backup lockdown and restricted restore access sit on Enterprise Control, which is quote-only.
  • Forever version retention costs extra, so check the default history covers a theft discovered weeks later.
6 Egnyte logo

Egnyte

Governed file sharing with ransomware detection, suspicious login alerts and HIPAA-ready compliant storage.

Pricing
Business $22/user/mo; Enterprise Lite $39/user/mo, both paid annually

Best for: Firms that share large case files with clients and experts and have no dedicated DMS

Pros

  • Enterprise Lite adds artifact-based ransomware detection and suspicious login detection on top of external user sharing.
  • Compliant storage options cover HIPAA, FINRA, SOC 2 and ISO 27001, which gives the firm an answer when a healthcare or financial client's vendor questionnaire asks where its files sit.

Cons

  • At $39 a seat Enterprise Lite costs more per user than Microsoft 365 Business Premium, so it pays off only if SharePoint does not fit.
  • Ransomware snapshot recovery and sensitive data classification sit on Ultimate, which is quote-only.
7 KnowBe4 Security Awareness Training logo

KnowBe4 Security Awareness Training

Phishing simulation and training with a published per-seat MSRP, from a 25-seat band.

Pricing
$2.40/seat/mo for 25 to 50 seats on a 3-year term (Foundation)

Best for: Firms that want staff to recognise fake IT calls and phishing before a click

Pros

  • The price is printed per seat for 25 to 50 users, so the line goes into the budget without a sales call.
  • Advanced at $3.75 a seat adds more training content for firms that want role-based lessons.

Cons

  • The smallest band starts at 25 seats, so a 20-person firm pays for five unused seats.
  • The rate runs on a 3-year term: $2,160 over the term at 25 seats, committed before the first simulation.
8 Bitwarden Teams logo

Bitwarden Teams

Open-source business vault with credential sharing, event logs, directory sync and SCIM on Teams.

Pricing
$4/user/mo billed annually; Enterprise $6/user/mo

Best for: Cost-conscious firms that want a shared vault with event logs at half the price of 1Password

Pros

  • Teams includes event log auditing and SCIM provisioning, which is enough to show a client or insurer who used a shared login and when access ended.
  • Twenty seats cost $80 a month, less than half the 1Password Business bill for the same firm.

Cons

  • Passwordless SSO and enterprise policies sit on Enterprise at $6 a seat.
  • The interface is plainer than 1Password, which matters when senior partners are the slowest adopters.
9 Cisco Duo logo

Cisco Duo

Phishing-resistant MFA and single sign-on in front of any app, with a free tier for very small practices.

Pricing
Free up to 10 users; Essentials $3/user/mo, Advantage $6, Premier $9

Best for: Firms on Google Workspace, or needing MFA on VPN and remote desktop outside Microsoft 365

Pros

  • Essentials includes phishing-resistant MFA, passwordless sign-in and SSO, a control the FBI recommends against this crew.
  • Duo Free covers 10 users, so a solo or three-lawyer practice gets strong MFA at no cost.

Cons

  • A firm on Business Premium already has Entra ID P1 for MFA, so Duo would be a second sign-in system to manage.
  • Identity threat detection starts on Advantage, which doubles the Essentials rate.

What it is

Cybersecurity for a law firm is the set of controls that keeps client confidences confidential: who can sign in, what runs on the laptops, how privileged documents leave the building and how the firm recovers when files are locked or stolen. ABA Model Rule 1.6(c) asks lawyers to make reasonable efforts to prevent unauthorized disclosure of, or access to, client information.

Reasonable does not mean enterprise. A 20-person firm cannot staff a security operations center, so the stack has to work while the managing partner is in court and the IT contractor is at another client.

Each pick below covers one job. Microsoft 365 handles identity, device management and mail filtering. Huntress watches the endpoints, 1Password holds the court filing, bank and client portal logins, and Backblaze keeps the copy you restore from.

Why it matters

The attack that hits law firms is a phone call, not a zero-day. The FBI describes callers who pose as IT staff and talk an employee into opening a remote desktop session, then exfiltrate data and threaten to publish it. Encryption of files is optional for this crew, so a backup alone does not save the firm.

That is why the order below starts with identity and endpoints. Multi-factor sign-in stops a stolen password, and a 24/7 managed endpoint team can isolate a laptop where a remote access tool appears at 9 p.m.

Training comes next, because the first defense against a fake IT call is a paralegal who hangs up. For the controls that hold when someone clicks anyway, read how to prevent phishing attacks.

Key features to look for

Who watches the alerts
Defender for Business raises alerts but leaves the response to your IT contractor. A managed EDR service puts a human on them overnight, and that coverage is the line you pay for.
Encryption that clients can open
Opposing counsel and clients will not install software to read a settlement draft. Check that recipients can open an encrypted message without an account or password.
Backup the attacker cannot reach
An off-site copy with version history lets the firm restore a laptop without paying. Check how long versions are kept and who may restore.
Minimums and terms
Huntress needs 50 seats when bought direct or through a reseller, KnowBe4's smallest band starts at 25 seats on a 3-year term, and Virtru sells in 5-user packs.

Pricing

Prices were checked on each vendor's own pricing page on 17 October 2026, in US dollars at list price or MSRP, before tax and reseller discounts. The scenario is a 20-person firm with 20 laptops: every line is the rate times 20, except KnowBe4 (25-seat floor) and Virtru (one 5-user pack for the partners).

The core stack comes to $1,143.60 a month, or $13,723.20 a year: Microsoft 365 Business Premium $440, Huntress Managed EDR through an MSP $179.80, 1Password Business $179.80, Backblaze $165, Virtru Starter $119 and KnowBe4 Foundation $60. Without the managed endpoint line it is $963.80.

Bought direct, Huntress's 50-seat minimum lifts its line to $449.50. Huntress ITDR adds $96 a month for 20 identities, and Egnyte Enterprise Lite adds $780 for firms that need it instead of SharePoint.

Methodology: we started from the 865 tools in Toolradar's October 2026 security ranking, kept products that a firm without security staff can run or outsource, and ordered them by the attack path the FBI describes for law firms. Dupple has no test lab, so this page draws on vendor pages, not hands-on testing.

Mistakes to avoid
×Buying Business Premium and leaving it on defaults. Conditional access, device compliance and Defender for Office 365 policies need configuring before the licence protects anything.
×Treating backup as the ransomware plan. The crew the FBI names for law firms steals data and threatens to publish it, so restoring files does not end the extortion.
×Letting staff approve remote sessions for anyone who calls as IT. Write down who your real IT provider is and how they identify themselves.
×Sending privileged drafts as plain attachments to personal client email. Encryption with revocation limits the damage when an address is mistyped.
Expert tips
→Turn on MFA for every account before buying anything else. It is in Business Premium already, and Duo Free covers firms of up to 10 users that are not.
→Ask your MSP whether it resells Huntress. Through an MSP there is no Huntress seat minimum, which saves a 20-laptop firm from paying for 50.
→Put the trust account, court e-filing and bank logins in a shared vault with activity logs, not in a spreadsheet on the office manager's desktop.
→Test a restore from Backblaze once a quarter on one laptop, and write down how long it took.
→Tell staff the firm's IT provider will never ask them to install remote software from a cold call, and repeat it in the KnowBe4 campaign.

The bottom line

Start with Microsoft 365 Business Premium, configured properly, because most firms already pay for Outlook and the security tools come in the same seat. Add Huntress through an MSP if nobody can answer an alert after hours, and 1Password or Bitwarden for the shared logins.

Then encrypt what leaves the building with Virtru, back up every laptop with Backblaze and train staff to hang up on fake IT calls. For a 20-person firm, that comes to about $57 per person a month at list prices. For deeper rankings, see best EDR and endpoint protection, best MDR services, best email security tools, best encrypted cloud storage and our Huntress review.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best cybersecurity for a law firm in 2026?

For most small and mid-size firms, Microsoft 365 Business Premium is the base, because it bundles sign-in controls, device management, Defender for Business and email phishing protection. Add Huntress Managed EDR for 24/7 endpoint response and 1Password Business for shared logins. Prices were checked on vendor pages in October 2026.

How much should a 20-person law firm spend on cybersecurity?

At October 2026 list prices, a core stack of Microsoft 365 Business Premium, Huntress through an MSP, 1Password Business, Backblaze, Virtru Starter and KnowBe4 costs $1,143.60 a month, about $57 per person. Without the managed endpoint service it is $963.80. MSP labour to configure and run it comes on top.

What does the ABA require for law firm cybersecurity?

ABA Model Rule 1.6(c) asks lawyers to make reasonable efforts to prevent unauthorized disclosure of, or access to, client information. It sets a reasonableness standard, not a product list, so MFA, endpoint protection, encryption of sensitive email and tested backups are the controls firms usually point to. Check your state bar's version of the rule.

Why are law firms targeted by hackers?

Firms hold privileged client data that is worth paying to keep private. The FBI warned in May 2025 that the Silent Ransom Group has consistently targeted US law firms since spring 2023, posing as IT support by phone, gaining remote desktop access and threatening to publish stolen files.

Do law firms need encrypted email?

For privileged attachments sent outside the firm, yes in practice. Virtru Starter costs $119 a month for 5 users billed annually, lets recipients open messages without an account, and lets senders revoke access after sending. Firms can limit it to the partners who send the most sensitive material.

Is Microsoft Defender enough for a law firm?

Defender for Business, included in Business Premium, detects threats on the laptops, but it does not staff a team to respond overnight. A firm with no one on call adds a managed service such as Huntress, which has no seat minimum through an MSP.
